Major Drug Bust on Rajasthan-Gujarat Border: Kutch Youth and Woman Home Guard Arrested with Over 39 Kg of Poppy Husk
Police seize narcotics worth over ₹1.17 lakh near Nainava Checkpost in Banaskantha; crackdown highlights growing drug trafficking in Kutch region
Authorities in Gujarat have intensified their crackdown on drug smuggling, arresting two individuals—including a woman home guard—from Kutch with a significant haul of poppy husk (poshdoda) near the Rajasthan-Gujarat border. The operation underscores the ongoing challenge of narcotics trafficking into the dry state, particularly through border districts like Kutch and Banaskantha.
Details of the Seizure
On the morning of July 11, Banaskantha district police were conducting routine vehicle checks at the Nainava checkpost when they intercepted a Creta car (registration GJ-12-DA-3718) entering Gujarat from Rajasthan. During the search, officers discovered 39.244 kilograms of poppy husk, a banned narcotic, concealed in the vehicle’s trunk. The seized contraband is valued at approximately ₹1,17,732.
The two arrested suspects have been identified as:
Devubha Nathubha Kalaji Sodha (27), a resident of Koriyani village in Lakhpat taluka, Kutch
Simranjit Kaur Gurudevsingh Bhupendrasinh Raishikh (28), a resident of Punjabivandh, Nara village, Nakhatrana taluka, Kutch, and a serving member of the local Gram Rakshak Dal (Home Guard)
Interrogation and Investigation
Preliminary questioning revealed that the poppy husk was sourced from Lakhasar, near Barmer in Rajasthan. However, the suspects did not provide satisfactory answers regarding the intended recipients of the narcotics in Gujarat. Police have registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and seized both the narcotics and the vehicle, with total assets impounded valued at over ₹9.28 lakh.
Context: Rising Drug Trafficking in Kutch
This arrest comes amid growing concerns about the influx of narcotics and liquor into Gujarat, a state with strict prohibition laws. Kutch, with its extensive border with Rajasthan, has become a hotspot for smugglers transporting banned substances, as highlighted by recent high-profile seizures and police actions in the region
Law enforcement agencies have noted an uptick in trafficking attempts involving local youth and even individuals with links to law enforcement or security services. In similar cases, bootleggers have used creative concealment methods and recruited people with local knowledge to bypass police checks58.
Impact and Legal Action
Both suspects remain in custody as investigations continue into the broader smuggling network. The involvement of a woman home guard, reportedly absent from duty for some time, has raised further concerns about the reach of drug syndicates in the region.
latest bust highlights the urgent need for continued vigilance and cross-border cooperation to combat the growing menace of narcotics trafficking in Gujarat’s border districts.
