The Congress in Assam is set for another setback ahead of the Assembly elections, as senior leader and Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi has stepped down from the party on Tuesday.

As per reports, he is widely expected to switch sides to the BJP in the coming days.

Bordoloi, who represents the Nagaon parliamentary constituency, submitted his resignation to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. However, as per reports, in Kharge’s office indicated that the letter had not been formally received at the time of reporting.

In his resignation note, Bordoloi expressed deep anguish over his decision.

“With an overwhelming sense of sadness today, I hereby tender my resignation from all posts, privileges, and the primary membership of the Indian National Congress,” he wrote.

Reports also claimed that party insiders suggest that the veteran leader had been feeling marginalised for several months. The immediate flashpoint is believed to be a disagreement over the choice of candidate for the Laharighat Assembly seat in Morigaon district, which falls within his Lok Sabha constituency.

In a unique intersection of botany and beat, researchers have immortalized one of Assam’s most beloved cultural icons by naming a newly discovered plant species after legendary singer Zubeen Garg.

The species, scientifically christened Osbeckia zubeengargiana, was identified in the lush wilderness of Manas National Park in the Baksa district. The discovery was made by a team of dedicated researchers, including Barnali Das and Prof. Namita Nath from the Department of Botany at Gauhati University, in collaboration with Dr. Prashob Pulpra from NSS College, Kerala. Their findings were recently published in the prestigious international taxonomy journal, Phytotaxa.

Belonging to the genus Osbeckia—a group of flowering plants known for their vibrant presence in the Eastern Himalayas—the new species is a striking addition to India’s biodiversity. While it shares some visual traits with its relative, Osbeckia rostrata, it stands apart due to its distinct growth habit, unique leaf structure, and specific seed size.

The researchers chose the name as a tribute to Zubeen Garg’s immense contribution to Assamese culture and his lifelong advocacy for nature. The name "Mon Jai" (meaning "I feel like" or "My heart desires")—associated with one of his most iconic songs—has become the unofficial theme for this discovery.

Reacting to the news, the singer's wife, Garima Saikia Garg, expressed deep emotion on social media, describing him as a "son of nature" and stating that this recognition is "nature’s justice" for a man who has always found his soul in the greenery of Assam.

This discovery not only celebrates a local hero but also reinforces Northeast India’s status as a global biodiversity hotspot, proving that even in the scientific world, the music of the land never stops playing.

The railway landscape of the Northeast is undergoing a radical shift. Prime Minister Modi has flagged off three vital new services: the Amrit Bharat Express (linking Kamakhya to South India), the Guwahati–New Jalpaiguri Express, and the Narangi–Agartala Express. Complementing this is the foundation laying of a ₹255 crore Railway Workshop at Bashbari, Kokrajhar.

This facility will not only maintain the region's trains but also serve as a major employment engine for local youth, turning the BTC region into a strategic logistics center.

The heart of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) is getting a major facelift. A dedicated ₹1,100 crore infrastructure package has been set in motion to eliminate traffic congestion and improve urban mobility.

The highlights include four massive flyovers at key traffic junctions like Gossaigaon and Debargaon, along with two major bridges. These projects are designed to provide the citizens of Kokrajhar with a smoother, faster daily commute, reflecting the region's rapid transition into a zone of peace and urban development.

In a historic move to modernize the state's transport backbone, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially launched Assam Mala 3.0. This massive initiative involves an investment of over ₹3,200 crore to construct and upgrade more than 900 kilometers of roads.

This project isn't just about asphalt; it’s about connecting remote villages to national highways, boosting local trade, and ensuring that the tea gardens and hills of Assam are more accessible than ever before. It marks a new chapter in the state's journey toward becoming a primary economic hub in the Northeast.

The Indian Oil Corporation said there was enough LPG stock to ensure smooth supply for the next 11-13 days, but admitted that consumers were finding it difficult to book refills due to glitches in the online booking platform.

“There will not be any problem in the next eleven days. There is enough stock. The government has also directed the four refineries to ramp up production,” IOC’s CGM (LPG) Amarjyoti Bordoloi said on Friday.

He, however, admitted that due to a surge in bookings, the online platform has developed glitches.

“There is panic due to the West Asia crisis. Bookings and call volumes have surged by five to seven times. IOC is trying to fix the issue. The online system should work fine by this evening or tomorrow,” he said.

The Assam government has relaxed certain provisions of the mutual transfer policy for school teachers, allowing newly appointed teachers to apply for mutual transfers and removing the earlier restriction that barred teachers from seeking another transfer within two years.

In a notification issued by the Department of School Education, the government partially modified earlier orders under the Assam Elementary and Secondary School Teachers (Regulation and Posting) Act, 2020. The changes aim to facilitate administrative convenience and enable teachers to benefit from locational advantages so that they can focus more effectively on providing quality education.

The State Cabinet on Tuesday decided to accord Other Backward Class (OBC) status to 37 tea tribe communities in Assam.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that these communities were earlier categorized as sub-castes. "Now, they will be given the status of OBC independently. The Social Welfare department will issue a notification soon," he said.

Sarma said that the Cabinet also decided to extend the PM SVANidhi Scheme to street vendors in census towns of the State. Currently, the scheme is extended to vendors in municipal areas only.

The Gauhati High Court on Thursday (February 26, 2026) issued a notice to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after hearing multiple petitions seeking action against him for alleged hate speeches targeting Muslims whom the Chief Minister addresses as the ‘miya’ community.

Miya is a pejorative term commonly used in Assam to refer to Bengali-speaking or Bengali-origin Muslims. The Chief Minister has gone on record to say that the word means “illegal immigrants”.

A Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar and Justice Arun Dev Choudhury, heard senior advocates representing the petitioners and directed that notices be served to the Chief Minister, as well as the Central and the Assam governments. The next hearing is scheduled for April 21.
