On top of Athens — where the city meets the sky 💖

Lycabettus Hill (also spelled Lykavittos) is the highest point in central Athens, rising about 277 meters (909 feet) above sea level. It offers unmatched panoramic views of Athens, the Acropolis, and even the Aegean Sea on a clear day.
• In ancient mythology, it was believed to be a rock dropped by the goddess Athena. She intended to use it to fortify the Acropolis, but when she was startled by bad news, she accidentally dropped the rock — creating Lycabettus Hill.
• The name “Lycabettus” likely comes from “Lykos”, the Greek word for wolf, because the hill was once inhabited by wolves in ancient times.
• On its summit sits the Chapel of St. George, built in the 19th century, a whitewashed Greek Orthodox church still used today for weddings and services.
• The hill was once bare and treeless — its pine trees were only planted in the late 19th and early 20th century to beautify the area.✨
