"Before India had Fords, Rolls-Royces or familiar motorcars, there was the De Dion-Bouton.

Widely considered one of the first cars imported into India, the French machine reportedly arrived in 1892 for Maharaja Rajinder Singh of Patiala, at a time when Indian roads were still dominated by horses, carts and carriages.

The car is also said to have carried the registration “Patiala 0.”

A steam-powered automobile appearing on Indian roads in the 1890s must have looked like something from the future and it marked the beginning of a much bigger story: the evolution of the Indian automobile industry.

"Before it became one of Chennai’s best-known landmarks, this building belonged to a business that sounds almost impossible today: shipping ice halfway across the world.

Frederic Tudor transported natural ice from America to India before mechanical refrigeration existed, with specialised Ice Houses built to store it.

Chennai’s surviving Ice House is now better known as Vivekananda House, but its walls still carry the memory of a remarkable global trade.
