Microsoft is working on a project called Silica, a new storage technology that encodes data in a small sheet of glass using laser pulses. This method allows data to be stored for potentially 10,000 years or more without requiring any power. The glass plates can hold a large amount of data, with a single plate having enough space for 7TB of storage.

The process of writing and reading data from the glass involves multiple stages, including imprinting voxels inside the glass, retrieving the glass plate using a robot, and using a computer-controlled microscope and AI to decode the data. This technology is being developed with the cloud in mind and is intended for cold storage, where immediate access to the data is not necessary.

While other forms of data storage, such as higher-density glass mediums and DNA storage, are also being explored, Microsoft's Project Silica is still in the research phase and will undergo further development before commercialization.

Scientists drafted an incredibly detailed map of the human brain

Researchers have created the largest atlas of human brain cells so far, revealing more than 3,000 cell types — many of which are new to science. The work will aid the study of diseases, cognition and what makes us human, among other things, say the authors.

The enormous cell atlas offers a detailed snapshot of the most complex known organ. Researchers have previously mapped the human brain using techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging, but this is the first atlas of the whole human brain at the single-cell level, showing its intricate molecular interactions.

The Japanese company Tsubame Industries has created a 4.5-meter, 3.5-ton robot that resembles the mecha from the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam.

The device, called The Archax in honor of the Archaeopteryx, has two modes: “robot” with an elevated torso and “auto” in which it can move at speeds up to 10 km/h.

The robot is powered by batteries, and the cockpit is lined with screens on all sides, like in some Titanfall. The cost of one robot is $3 million.

During the recent IROS2023 conference in Detroit, the Disney Research Center unveiled a new social robot that has been trained using reinforcement learning simulations.

Over the course of a year, the robot has practiced animation and walking independently, resulting in smooth overall movement and free head movement. An operator controls the robot through a control facility, providing commands.

Disney plans to utilize this robot, along with other technologies from the Disney Research Center, in areas such as park shows, film production, and television. The robot is capable of traversing bumpy terrain and has a unique style.

The Disney Research Center, located in Zurich, Switzerland, collaborates closely with technical departments from Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios, and Disney Pictures, focusing on advancing technology and creative services in film production.
