The grief over Zubeen Garg’s untimely death feels even heavier when one remembers the shadow of tragedy that had already struck his family decades ago. In 2002, his younger sister, Jongki Barthakur, also a talented singer and actor, lost her life in a tragic road accident in Assam. She was just 18 years old.

On January 12, 2002, Jongki was on her way to perform at one of Zubeen’s cultural events in Sootea when her vehicle collided head-on with a truck near Balipara in Sonitpur district. Fate dealt a cruel twist that day: Zubeen had originally been travelling with her but switched cars only minutes before the accident. Jongki never made it to the show.
