WE REMEMBER - 1st Tea Garden Workers to be Martyred in
TheDC team salutes and remembers six tea workers who died during a labour-agitation on 25 June 1955 at Margaret’s Hope tea estate under the Kurseong sub division.
Today, in 1955, six tea workers, including a pregnant woman, of Margaret’s Hope tea estate were shot dead by West Bengal police for demanding their rights. This was the 1st ever workers movement against the tea planters in Darjeeling hills.
A memorial pillar stands erected in Margaret's Hope in honor of the 6 workers - Jitman Tamang (48), Padamlal Kami (25), Moulishova Raini (22), Amritrai Kamini (18), Kancha Sunwar (17) and Kaley S***a (14) who were shot dead by West Bengal police for demanding higher wages on June 25, 1955.
Among the dead was also a 22 years old Saheed Moulishova who was pregnant at the time of her murder by Bengal police.
The oldest amongst the dead was 48 years old, while the youngest was a lad of 14 years old; others were 17, 18,22 and 25 years old respectively.
Following their killing there was widespread protest against the Bengal government, and over 60000 workers from Darjeeling and Dooars had shut down tea garden operations.
It is tragic that while the then CPI(M) leader Jyoti Basu, who was in the opposition, had decried these murders, and had demanded answers from the then Congress Govt in Bengal, our own Gorkha MLA DBS Gahatraj of All India Gorkha League had termed the killling as "appropriate action against causeless rebels."
Such is the tragedy of Darjeeling... our own have repeatedly failed us.
