Early intervention in autism can truly change a child’s life. The earlier a child receives the right support, the better their chances to develop communication, social and daily living skills. But one of the most powerful steps begins at home—with parental acceptance. When parents accept their child’s uniqueness without denial or delay, they can take timely action, seek support, and become the strongest advocates for their child.

For families who may not be able to afford expensive private therapies, District Early Intervention Centres (DEICs) under the government’s health system are a valuable support. In Darjeeling district, DEICs (usually linked to district hospitals) provide screening, basic therapies, and guidance either free or at very low cost. These centres aim to support children with developmental delays and disabilities, making early help accessible to economically weaker sections.

Awareness, acceptance, and timely support can make a lifetime of difference. 💙

Retained Rooting Reflex

🌱 Why this happens
• The rooting reflex should integrate (disappear) in infancy
• If retained, the child may:
• Constantly seek oral input (chewing clothes, fingers)
• Have difficulty with feeding or oral awareness
• Show strong sensory reactions (like distress when food touches face)

This is also connected to Sensory Processing challenges, especially:
• Oral sensory seeking (chewing, biting)
• Tactile defensiveness (dislike of food on skin)

🧩 Practical Solutions (Most Effective Approach = Combination)

1. Oral Sensory Alternatives (VERY IMPORTANT)

Give a safe replacement instead of trying to stop the behavior.
• Chewable tools (chewelry, chew tubes)
• Silicone straws or chew sticks
• Crunchy/chewy foods (carrot sticks, roasted snacks if safe)

👉 This satisfies the brain’s need for oral input.

2. Oral Motor Exercises

A trained therapist (especially Occupational Therapy) can guide this, but some simple ones:
• Blowing bubbles
• Using whistles or straws
• Thick liquids through a straw
• “Kiss and smile” exercises

These help integrate primitive reflexes over time.

3. Desensitization for Food on Face

For extreme reactions:

Start VERY slowly:
1. Let child touch food with hands first
2. Then touch near lips
3. Then small controlled exposure to face
4. Always allow wiping immediately

👉 Never force—this can increase sensitivity.

4. Deep Pressure & Regulation Activities

These help calm the nervous system:
• Tight hugs (if child likes it)
• Weighted blankets
• Pushing/pulling heavy objects
• Wall pushes

5. Structured Sensory Diet

A daily plan designed by an Occupational Therapist:
• Scheduled chewing time
• Movement breaks
• Calming activities

6. Reflex Integration Therapy (Specialized but Effective)

Look for therapists trained in:
• Rhythmic movement training
• Primitive reflex integration exercises

These directly target retained reflexes.

⚠️ What NOT to do
• Don’t constantly say “stop”
• Don’t remove the behavior without replacement
• Don’t force food exposure

🌟 When to seek help

If behaviors are:
• Very intense
• Causing skin damage or infections
• Affecting eating/speech

Then definitely consult:
• Occupational therapist
• Speech therapist (for oral motor support)

💡 Simple Daily Plan Example
• Morning: crunchy snack + straw drinking
• Afternoon: chewing tool + movement play
• Evening: calming deep pressure activity

• Avoid judging behaviors
• Promote inclusive schools and workplaces
