Environmental activist and SDC Foundation founder Anoop Nautiyal has consistently raised concerns over the growing risk from glacial activity and expanding glacial lakes in Uttarakhand, stressing the need for regular scientific monitoring and stronger preparedness.

Uttarakhand currently has 13 glacial lakes identified as sensitive to potential Glacial Lake Outburst Flood risks, spread across Pithoragarh, Chamoli, Bageshwar, Tehri Garhwal and Uttarkashi. Pithoragarh has six such lakes, while Chamoli has four.

Authorities are now strengthening monitoring through scientific surveys, sensors, early-warning systems and better preparedness for vulnerable downstream areas.

The larger concern raised by experts and environmental groups is clear: in a climate-vulnerable Himalayan state, disaster prevention must receive the same priority as disaster response.

A mobile science initiative called ‘Labs on Wheels’ is helping connect children in Uttarakhand’s remote mountain areas with practical and interactive science learning.

The programme is being conducted across different schools in Almora district through collaboration between UCOST’s Almora branch, Manaskhand Science Centre and Agastya International Foundation.

By taking science experiments and demonstrations directly to schools, the initiative aims to make learning more accessible for students who may have limited exposure to laboratory-based education.

For remote Himalayan communities, such mobile learning models can play an important role in reducing educational gaps and encouraging curiosity in science from an early age.

Authorities were placed on alert in Papadgad, Bhatwari tehsil of Uttarkashi, after information about a sudden rise in water levels was received around 12:16 PM on September 1.

UJVN Ltd facilities at Maneri, Joshiyara and Dharasu were alerted, while teams from the tehsil administration, SDRF, police and revenue department reached the area to monitor the situation. Authorities later reported the situation at Papadgad as normal, with no major damage reported at the time.

Authorities in Bazpur, Udham Singh Nagar, have sealed four madrasas after inspection teams reported that the institutions could not produce the required recognition papers and supporting documents.

The operation was led by SDM Richa Singh, with officials from the revenue, education and police departments. The administration says verification of other institutions will continue, with further action based on documentation and recognition status.

Separately, Mufti Mujeeb was arrested over an alleged provocative speech in Rudrapur, and the reportedly unrecognised madrasa he headed was later sealed. The Rudrapur case and the Bazpur drive are separate developments and should not be presented as the same action.

YouTuber and bike rider As Mohmmad, popularly known as Ashu UK Rider, reportedly lost his life in a tragic road accident while travelling from Dehradun towards Paonta Sahib.

According to the information provided, Ashu had purchased a new Kawasaki ZX-10R, worth around ₹22 lakh, on August 27. Near Aul Hinduwala, the motorcycle reportedly went out of control and collided with a road divider. The impact threw him from the motorcycle, and he died at the scene.

The tragedy is also a reminder for every rider: wear proper protective gear, follow speed limits, avoid risky manoeuvres and never compromise on road safety. A destination can wait—your life cannot.
