SME WORLD

SME WORLD SME WORLD talks about business not only in terms of profitability and growth but in terms of ethics The magazine made its appearance in August, 2008.

Despite being the drivers of the economy, the media has rendered little attention to SMEs. Amidst the glitz and glamour of the corporate word the dim and murky world of the ‘Small’ industries fails to draw the limelight. Their concerns and issues conveniently get swept under the carpet. It’s an irony that even after six decades of sweat and toil since independence, the SMEs have still not got thei

r due place of honour in the prestigious columns of our magazines and newspapers. TRP-hungry business channels (the electronic media) are preoccupied with the current and future prospects of tycoons. However, the small entrepreneur is no where seen on the small screen. For long, SMEs have felt the compelling need to voice their concerns. They have pined for a platform which can represent them and recognize them for their substantial contribution to India’s growth story. Doling out a few awards has been no sustainable encouragement. For these long felt needs, SME WORLD has come as a welcome answer. India’s only magazine for SMEs so far, SME World has won wide acclaim for its formidable efforts to address the concerns of the small and medium enterprises in India. SME WORLD talks about business not only in terms of profitability and growth but in terms of ethics and common social welfare as well. It embraces the humble entrepreneur, whose business merely ensures him a graceful existence. This magazine celebrates the spirit of the small entrepreneur who is constantly under threat from the bigger fishes but survives, owing to the dint of hard work and an undying fire in his belly. SME World has since won rave reviews from readers of all ilks, “delightfully readable; out of the box, a sincere effort” and the like.

Every enterprise should make two balance sheets - one is Financial and the other is Goodwill. If your financial balance is strong and the goodwill BS weak then you have not made any headway in life.

On the other hand if your financial BS is weak but Goodwill BS strong then you are a winner.

Government’s focus on existing employment drivers (infrastructure, manufacturing, and government jobs) that have not moved the needle much to date is all the more worrying. Without a more concrete plan, India runs the risk of missing out on potential demographic dividends."

Despite promises, the unemployment rate over recent years indicates not enough jobs have been added to make a significant difference. Periodic Labour Force Survey data showed the unemployment rate which stood at 3.4% in 2013-14 was only marginally lower at 3.2% in 2022-23.

Despite claims of square economic growth, we could not create jobs. Have we identified the fault lines? Government faces a huge task which is far from political.

My Mother’s Day of Yore

When we were growing up, we hadn’t heard of Mother’s Day nor was there a need to celebrate Mother’s or Father’s day. All the days were spent under the imposing yet loving care of our parents. We didn’t know if there was any need to express our affection to our creators. Everything revolved around our parents and friends.

We would spend the day playing all those rugged games with friends in lanes and by-lanes near our homes and would religiously come back home like faithful cows well before our fathers reached home.

Love for mother and father was natural. A dialogue with father was rare. Mother would always take our side in the event of any unpleasant situation. She would scold us in a mock display of anger to make our father cool down.

I fondly remember how my mother used to be the last to retire to bed after making round of our rooms ensuring that we are properly tucked under the quilt in the winters.

It was a ritual for her to wake up in the wee hours to cook and pack food for us. In our hearts, we knew she would eat only after seeing us off to school.

We learnt from our mother what respect is. She would often scold us if we forgot to address our old maid as 'Mausi'. “She is our elder.” Years later, when I was getting ready to leave for a trip overseas, I went to her to seek her blessings. She reached out for her small purse and took out a 100 Rupee note, “This is for you and take care that you eat in time and eat well.” She sent me off all smiles as she tried to hold back her tears.

I keep wondering if I could ever gauge the emotional bonding she had with her children. The Jews live by the phrase: 'God could not be everywhere, and therefore He made mothers.' The 19th century congregationalist, clergyman and social reformer Henry Beecher thus truly remarked: “The mother's heart is the child's classroom.” At least, I don't need a Mother's Day. I lived it for years.

School going children often become the victims of wrong driving by their school bus drivers. All drivers of buses, private or school, must be go through strict and regular fool proof counselling. Police must also come forward to make wrong and drunk driving as unpardonable offence. It is a gross irregularity on the part of school management to leave the lives and safety of thousands of children to unruly drivers. Let this be adopted by all schools as SOP. High sounding corporate schools must consider safety of innocent lives first.
