The history of
began with the discovery of two critical principles: The first is camera obscura image projection, the second is the discovery that some substances are visibly altered by exposure to light[2]. There are no artifacts or descriptions that indicate any attempt to capture images with light sensitive materials prior to the 18th century.
View from the Window at Le Gras 1826 or 1827, believed to be the earliest surviving camera photograph.[1] Original (left) and colorized reoriented enhancement (right).
Around 1717, Johann Heinrich Schulze used a light-sensitive slurry to capture images of cut-out letters on a bottle. However, he did not pursue making these results permanent. Around 1800, Thomas Wedgwood made the first reliably documented, although unsuccessful attempt at capturing camera images in permanent form. His experiments did produce detailed photograms, but Wedgwood and his associate Humphry Davy found no way to fix these images.
In 1826, Nicéphore Niépce first managed to fix an image that was captured with a camera, but at least eight hours or even several days of exposure in the camera were required and the earliest results were very crude. Niépce's associate Louis Daguerre went on to develop the daguerreotype process, the first publicly announced and commercially viable photographic process. The daguerreotype required only minutes of exposure in the camera, and produced clear, finely detailed results. On August 2, 1839 Daguerre demonstrated the details of the process to the Chamber of Peers in Paris. On August 19 the technical details were made public in a meeting of the Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Fine Arts in the Palace of Institute. (For granting the rights of the inventions to the public, Daguerre and Niépce were awarded generous annuities for life.)[3][4][5] When the metal based daguerreotype process was demonstrated formally to the public, the competitor approach of paper-based calotype negative and salt print processes invented by William Henry Fox Talbot was already demonstrated in London (but with less publicity).[5] Subsequent innovations made photography easier and more versatile. New materials reduced the required camera exposure time from minutes to seconds, and eventually to a small fraction of a second; new photographic media were more economical, sensitive or convenient. Since the 1850s, the collodion process with its glass-based photographic plates combined the high quality known from the Daguerreotype with the multiple print options known from the calotype and was commonly used for decades. Roll films popularized casual use by amateurs. In the mid-20th century, developments made it possible for amateurs to take pictures in natural color as well as in black-and-white.
The commercial introduction of computer-based electronic digital cameras in the 1990s soon revolutionized photography. During the first decade of the 21st century, traditional film-based photochemical methods were increasingly marginalized as the practical advantages of the new technology became widely appreciated and the image quality of moderately priced digital cameras was continually improved. Especially since cameras became a standard feature on smartphones, taking pictures (and instantly publishing them online) has become a ubiquitous everyday practice around the world.

**Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC): A Deep Dive into India's Most Popular Game Show**

# # # Introduction to Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC)

"Kaun Banega Crorepati" (KBC), the Indian version of the globally renowned game show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," has become an iconic part of Indian television since its debut in 2000. KBC is a quiz-based reality show that offers contestants the chance to win huge cash prizes based on their knowledge. Over the years, it has not only entertained millions but also inspired and transformed the lives of countless contestants. Hosted by Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, KBC quickly captured the imagination of viewers, becoming one of the most-watched television programs in India.

The format of KBC, like its global counterpart, revolves around asking a series of general knowledge questions of increasing difficulty. Contestants must answer these questions correctly to win escalating amounts of money, ultimately aiming for the grand prize of ₹7 crore (₹70 million). The questions span a wide array of subjects, from history and geography to current affairs, pop culture, and science.

In this article, we will explore the origins, evolution, impact, format, cultural significance, controversies, and legacy of KBC in detail.

---

# # # Origins and History of KBC

The concept of KBC is based on the international television game show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," which was first broadcast in the United Kingdom in 1998. Created by David Briggs and produced by ITV Studios, "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" quickly became a global phenomenon, inspiring many countries to create their own versions of the show.

India’s version of the show, "Kaun Banega Crorepati," was created by the Indian television network STAR Plus. The show was conceptualized by renowned producer and director Siddhartha Basu, who worked with his company, Synergy Media. The format for KBC was adapted to suit the Indian audience, ensuring that the questions reflected Indian culture, history, and interests.

The first season of KBC premiered on July 3, 2000, and was a revolutionary moment in Indian television. The show quickly became a cultural sensation, reaching millions of households across the country. It was hosted by none other than Amitabh Bachchan, one of the most revered actors in the history of Indian cinema. The association of Amitabh Bachchan with KBC proved to be a masterstroke, as his persona, gravitas, and charm resonated deeply with the Indian public.

The success of the first season was unprecedented, breaking records in terms of viewership and creating a new kind of interactive entertainment for Indian television. At a time when cable television was still emerging and options for quality entertainment were limited, KBC provided a platform that brought people of all backgrounds together, bridging divides through the shared excitement of watching contestants answer questions for large cash prizes.

# # # Format of Kaun Banega Crorepati

The format of KBC is simple yet engaging, making it accessible to a broad audience. The show consists of the following elements:

# # # # 1. **The Question Rounds**
The game is structured in a series of 15 multiple-choice questions, with each correct answer bringing the contestant closer to the grand prize. The questions range from easy to extremely challenging. Each question is accompanied by four options, and the contestant has to choose the correct answer to move forward.

- **Level 1 to Level 5 (₹1,000 to ₹10,000):** The first five questions are relatively easy and serve as a warm-up. Contestants are typically familiar with the type of general knowledge being tested, which includes popular topics like Bollywood, sports, and Indian history.

- **Level 6 to Level 11 (₹20,000 to ₹1,00,000):** The next set of questions introduces more difficult challenges. Contestants must demonstrate a deeper knowledge of subjects such as literature, world geography, and science.

- **Level 12 to Level 14 (₹2,00,000 to ₹50,00,000):** The questions become increasingly difficult, often requiring a high level of general knowledge and sometimes even a bit of luck. Contestants may need to make educated guesses or rely on intuition.

- **Final Question (₹7 Crore):** The final question is the ultimate challenge, where the contestant has to answer an extremely difficult question to win the grand prize. If answered correctly, they take home the highest possible reward.

# # # # 2. **Lifelines**
To help contestants, KBC offers various "lifelines" that can be used during the game. These lifelines give players a chance to seek assistance when they are unsure about the answer to a question. The lifelines available in the show are:

- **Phone-a-Friend:** Contestants can call a pre-selected friend or family member to help them answer a question. This lifeline allows for a more personal connection and adds a level of suspense and drama.

- **50:50:** This lifeline eliminates two incorrect options from the question, leaving the contestant with only two remaining options. This increases the odds of answering the question correctly.

- **Ask the Audience:** The audience, who is present in the studio, votes on what they believe the correct answer is. This lifeline provides a sense of community and adds an element of crowd participation.

- **Switch the Question:** This lifeline allows the contestant to discard the current question and switch it with a new one, which can sometimes be easier or more familiar to them.

# # # # 3. **Fastest Finger First**
Before contestants can sit in the hot seat to answer questions, they must first pass a "Fastest Finger First" round. In this round, multiple contestants are presented with a question, and they must arrange the answers in the correct order as quickly as possible. The contestant who answers the fastest gets the opportunity to move to the hot seat and play the game for the grand prize.

# # # # 4. **Winning Amounts**
The amount of money contestants can win in KBC depends on how many questions they answer correctly. The prize money increases with each correct answer, and there are fixed amounts guaranteed at certain levels, such as ₹1 lakh (₹100,000) and ₹40 lakh (₹4 million). This ensures that even if contestants don’t reach the grand prize, they walk away with a significant sum.

# # # Cultural Impact of KBC

The impact of KBC on Indian television and society is immense, and it has been more than just a game show. The success of KBC changed the way Indian audiences viewed quiz-based entertainment and influenced the structure of other Indian game shows that followed.

# # # # 1. **Empowering Ordinary People**
One of the major contributions of KBC was its ability to empower ordinary people. Contestants from small towns and rural areas were given an equal opportunity to sit in the hot seat and win large amounts of money. The show democratized fame and fortune, proving that knowledge, regardless of one's background, could lead to life-changing rewards.

Many contestants from humble backgrounds became household names after appearing on the show. For example, Harshvardhan Nawathe, a contestant from Mumbai, became a notable figure for his performance on KBC. The show opened doors for people who would never have had the chance to appear on such a prestigious platform. This egalitarian aspect made the show a cultural touchstone, especially in the post-liberalization period when India was embracing a new sense of opportunity.

# # # # 2. **Rising Popularity of General Knowledge**
KBC also ignited a national interest in general knowledge and trivia. The format encouraged viewers to enhance their own knowledge by watching contestants answer challenging questions. It became a source of pride for families to discuss their general knowledge and play along with the show. Many individuals even started to study and prepare for KBC, forming study groups and classes specifically aimed at improving knowledge for the game.

# # # # 3. **Promoting Social Causes**
In addition to entertainment, KBC has also used its platform to promote social causes. Over the years, several episodes have been dedicated to raising awareness about issues like sanitation, education, women's rights, and rural development. Amitabh Bachchan, as the host, has played a key role in using the show to highlight important social causes. Contestants have been given the opportunity to speak about their personal experiences with various societal issues, which has further connected the show with the viewers.

---

# # # Controversies Surrounding KBC

While KBC has been an overwhelming success, it has not been free from controversies. Some of the key controversies associated with the show include:

# # # # 1. **Rigging Allegations**
In the early years, there were allegations that KBC questions were sometimes pre-determined, and the selection of contestants was manipulated. In some instances, contestants claimed that they were coached to answer questions in a particular way. However, these allegations were never conclusively proven, and the show's producers have denied any rigging.

# # # # 2. **Questionable Questions**
Occasionally, questions asked on the show have been criticized for being too difficult or irrelevant. Some viewers felt that certain questions were too niche, requiring very specific knowledge, making it harder for contestants to answer. This led to debates about whether the show's difficulty level should be more accessible to a wider audience.

# # # # 3. **Emotional Manipulation**
Some critics also raised concerns about the emotional nature of the show. Contestants were often encouraged to share their personal, sometimes tragic, stories. While this added a human element to the show, some people felt that it could be emotionally manipulative, especially when it involved sensitive issues like family loss or financial hardship.

---

# # # Legacy and Evolution of KBC

Despite these controversies, KBC's legacy in Indian television is undeniable. The show has spawned multiple seasons, each with its own set of innovations and challenges.
