πβ¨ In 2016, Nigerian-born pediatric surgeon Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye made global headlines with a groundbreaking surgery at Texas Childrenβs Hospital.
At just 23 weeks of pregnancy, a baby was diagnosed with a large sacrococcygeal teratoma β a tumor nearly the same size as the fetus and threatening her life. π
Dr. Olutoye and his team performed a delicate procedure: they carefully opened the motherβs womb, brought out the baby partially (while still connected to the placenta), removed the tumor, and then placed her back safely to continue developing. π©ΊπΆ
The pregnancy continued smoothly, and the baby was later born healthy at 36 weeks. ππ
This historic achievement in fetal surgery stands as a powerful reminder of how far modern medicine and human skill can go to save lives. π
