An interactive session organized by Shri Ram College of Commerce at Delhi University featuring Gita Gopinath, a prominent alumna of the college who currently serves as the First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The event took place during her visit to India for the G20 summit and was hosted by the Economics Society of SRCC on September 11.

Gita Gopinath earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Delhi University, excelling in her studies. Notably, it is revealed that she initially scored only 45 per cent marks in class 7 but later improved her academic performance through hard work.

After completing her 12th-grade education in science, Gita Gopinath decided to pursue a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Economics. She enrolled at Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR) in Delhi, where she consistently ranked at the top of her class and received a gold medal for her outstanding performance.

Following her undergraduate studies, she continued her academic journey by joining the Delhi School of Economics and later pursued a fully-funded PhD program in economics at the University of Washington in Seattle. She ultimately obtained her Ph.D. from Princeton University in 2001.

The Kejriwal government has written to Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh highlighting the difficulties faced by SC/ST students during the admission process and urged him to lower the cut-off for them to fill the vacant seats.

The undergraduate admissions, which the university held through Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores for the first time, concluded in December.

But thousands of seats of the total 70,000 under various undergraduate courses could not be filled.

The vice chancellor, meanwhile, denied any plan to reopen admissions, saying the first semester is about to end now and it is not possible to take in new students.

Delhi SC/ST Welfare Minister Raaj Kumar Anand on Friday wrote to Singh, seeking filling up of vacant seats in DU colleges by lowering the cut-off marks for SC/ST students.

"In the current year, about thousands of seats are lying vacant in the reserved seats for Scheduled Caste students in DU. Because this year the same process is not being followed for the admission of these students and the admission is based on the marks or rank obtained in CUET (Common University Entrance Test)," Anand said.

"The same process is not being followed in the current year. Because the admission of SC students is based on the marks/rank obtained in CUET, the students of SC and ST communities are suffering," he said.

"Delhi government led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has requested the Vice-Chancellor of DU to re-examine the issue and relax the admission criteria of DU to fill the vacant seats by lowering the cut-off marks for SC students Committed to providing quality education to the poorest of the poor children," he added.

More than 65,000 seats in Undergraduate courses have been filled this academic session. Around 5,000 UG seats will remain vacant at various colleges of the University of Delhi.

Speaking to PTI, Yogesh Singh said the seats are only vacant in courses which are not in demand.

"I know seats are empty but the course is not in demand. We have taken all the steps to ensure seats get filled. However, the seats remain vacant. We have concluded the admission process for this year."

20/01/2023

Hundreds of Delhi University students held a march on Thursday, demanding a rollback of the four-year undergraduate programme on Thursday, a statement by the All India Student Association claimed.
During the march, called by the AISA, students demanded rollback of the FYUP, addition of English to AEC options, non-dilution of courses and putting a stop to fee hike, it said.

"Hundreds of first-year DU students gathered in the North Campus in response to AISA's call for a march against FYUP," the statement said.

The FYUP has been implemented under the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in the Delhi University. In the new course structure, credit scores have been introduced for every course, and students will have the option to pursue either a three-year honours course or four years honours course with or without research.

"This failure of FYUP is not just on the level of implementation, but corruption on the level of principle. The government is telling us that education is no more for the people, but for profits," said Abhigyan, Delhi AISA president.

"This fight against FYUP is a decisive fight for the nature and spirit of education in the country," claimed N Sachin, a DU professor, who also spoke on the status of public education under the Modi government during the march.

A group of students affiliated to the Students' Federation of India (SFI) has called for a protest at Delhi University's Hansraj College against the "discontinuation" of non-vegetarian food at the institution and alleged attempts at "saffronising the campus".

The Hansraj College unit of the SFI said in a statement that an uproar is building inside the college campus against the "ban" on non-vegetarian food and the protest will be held outside the Hansraj Hostel on January 20.

The students claim Hansraj College stopped serving non-vegetarian food at its canteen and hostel after it reopened following the pandemic in February last year. There has, however, been no official order on this.

The SFI claimed that there have also been instances where the Hansraj administration confiscated eggs from students who brought it to the hostel.

It said a survey was conducted within the Hansraj hostel in which almost 75 per cent of students were found to be non-vegetarians. Hansraj Principal Rama Sharma had earlier claimed that 90 per cent of students of the college were vegetarians, the SFI added.

"Majority of students of Hansraj are against this ban on non-vegetarian food and see this as an attempt to establish cultural hegemony. When these issues were raised on campus there was a violent response by the right-wing forces to suppress it," the statement noted.

"This response by the right-wing forces and the attitude of the administration towards this shows an attempt to saffronise the university spaces," it added.

Third-year student Alok Sharma, who resides in a hostel, said the college stopped serving non-vegetarian food abruptly. "We were not informed about any such order. I don't think any order was issued. This is unfair. We are living away from our family and we need proper food," he said.

Delhi University has formed a 17-member committee to establish a centre for “Hindu Studies” to introduce courses about the “history of Hindus" in the varsity, an official said.

However, an academic council member questioned the necessity to have such a centre. The panel will be headed by DU Director of South Delhi Campus Prakash Singh. Singh said a need was felt in the university for a Hindu studies centre. “There are around 23 universities across India that offer courses in Hindu studies. DU also thought it must also have a centre for Hindu studies," he told PTI.

"We have a centre for Buddhist studies but not a centre for Hindu studies. We thought let’s see whether it is viable to open a centre for Hindu studies," Singh added.

He emphasised that the panel would focus on first checking the viability of the centre and then introduce courses accordingly.
“First we will introduce courses in postgraduate and research and later we might introduce UG courses," Singh added.

The committee will decide how many courses will be introduced and whether courses will be introduced this year or next. The panel also plans to present the framework before the academic council in the near future, he further said.

However, an academic council member has opposed the need for the centre. "Where are other centres, Sikh, Muslim and other centres. The university must also open courses for these other religions," the council member, who did not wish to be named, said. Singh said it is wrong to link it to any religion as “Hindu is a way of life”.

“Unfortunately, we only see religious part of Hindu, Hindu is a way of life. Religion is only an aspect of it, we have thousands of years of history. The centre will focus on this aspect," he added.

Delhi University's Hansraj College has stopped serving non-vegetarian food to students in the canteen or hostel after the offline mode of study resumed after the Covid pandemic, news agency ANI reported.

College Principal, Professor Rama, said that the college had stopped serving non-veg nearly 3-4 years back and that the current decision must have been taken after considering the consent of the students.

"I don't remember when exactly the serving of non-veg food was stopped. It was 3-4 years back, but the committee must have had a word with students before taking the decision and then the decision must have been taken to stop serving non-veg food," Principal of the Hansraj College, Prof Rama.

Last year, clashes were reported from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) after students of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) allegedly stopped other left-leaning students from eating non-vegetarian food on Ram Navami. The ABVP students had also been accused of assaulting the mess secretary of the Kaveri Hostel on the campus.

The ABVP, on the other hand, alleged that left-wing students were interrupting Ram Navami prayers at the Kaveri Hostel.

14/01/2023

Nearly 52 per cent of first-year students at the University of Delhi claimed that their classes for core subjects were not happening regularly or were not happening at all, as per the survey conducted by the Student Federation of India (SFI).

The student organisation carried out the survey between December 5 and 25 among the 5,635 first-year students across various colleges of North, South and off campuses. The irregularities in classes in different colleges of DU have been a burning issue after the implementation of the newly-introduced four-year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP).

The report further finds that around 62 per cent of students stated that their Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC) and Skill Enhancement Course (SEC) classes were not being conducted at all. While around 56 per cent of students informed that their Value Addition Course (VAC) classes were not happening.

Ranjeet Yadav, 19, who is pursuing BA (History) from Delhi College of Arts and Commerce bemoaned about the irregularity in classes, “It’s been two months since our classes has begin but I still not knew the name of our AECC teacher.” said the undergrad student.

He further said that the mere introduction of new measures command no significance until the implemen-tation is poor. Irregularity of classes is worse in South and off campus colleges, almost 69 per cent of students from South Campus colleges informed that their VAC and SEC classes don’t happen regularly or don’t happen altogether.

The non-allotment of teachers to these papers was one of the key reasons for the irregularity of classes, suggested the report. Speaking about the survey, an SFI member said, “This data clearly highlighted the unpreparedness of the university while implementing FYUP and introducing new papers in the curriculum like VAC and SEC, which don’t add any value in the sphere of collegiate education.”

06/01/2023

The internet has found a chai lover who couldn't resist from ignoring the aroma of the beverage from a sudama tea stall in the national capital near Delhi University’s North Campus. The video of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) driver crossing the road, jumping through the divider, and returning to the driving seat with his tea cup has gone viral on social media. The incident resulted in traffic in the vicinity as the driver of the government-run bus transport halted the vehicle to fetch himself a cup of tea.

The video was shared on Twitter by a user who goes by Shubh. “Men,” read the caption accompanying the clip. The now-viral video shows the DTC bus driver quickly walking back to the orange-coloured bus with a cup of tea in his hand while others can be seen filming him. According to the video, the bus driver stopped the vehicle in the middle of the road just to drink tea from Sudama Tea Stall, a famous joint among tea lovers. While many condemned the bus driver for causing inconvenience to passengers and a traffic jam, others were in awe of his love for chai.

29/12/2022

Elections for the newly unified Municipal corporation of Delhi (MCD) is going to be held on 6th January, 2023.

The AAP has named Dr Shelly Oberoi as its mayor candidate and Aale Mohammad Iqbal, son of AAP’s Shoaib Iqbal, as its deputy mayor candidate for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

A former visiting assistant professor at Delhi University and a first-time councillor, 39-year-old Oberoi contested the elections from former Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta’s home turf of East Patel Nagar and defeated the candidate from there, Deepali Kumar, by 269 votes. BJP has had a stronghold in the area so far.

Born and brought up in Delhi, Oberoi joined AAP as an activist in 2013 and was the party’s state Mahila Morcha vice-president till 2020. She holds a PhD in management studies from IGNOU’s School of Management Studies and is a lifetime member of the Indian Commerce Association. Besides DU, she has also taught at several other universities like NMIMS, IP and IGNOU.

BJP has nominated Rekha Gupta as its candidate for the Mayor's post. Rekha Gupta is a councilor from Shalimar Bagh. She has been elected a councilor for the third time from here. She has also held many important responsibilities in MCD before and has been associated with BJP since her early college days.

Rekha Gupta has been a general secretary and member of BJP's national executive. She was the president of Delhi University Students Union in the year 1996 to 1997. She has a stronghold in North Delhi's Pitampura area while, she was a councilor from Pitampura for the year 2007 to 2012.

Earlier this month, AAP party brought an end to BJP's 15-year-rule in the MCD winning 134 of the 250 wards in the civic body polls. While the BJP could win only 104 seats. Now everyone's eyes are fixed on the election of the mayor to be held on January 6. An intense tussle for the mayor's post is speculated by some party leaders.

22/12/2022

Delhi University recently released a list of vacant seats for special spot admission round. The list highlights that there are around 30 Delhi colleges that have not yet filled seats several programmes. Most of these colleges are also the ones that have previously struggled to fill seats. To be noted that most of the colleges are off-campus. The University earlier announced that the last date for admission process will December 31.

List highlights that at Aditi Mahavidyalaya, over 25 programmes are still vacant. The seats have not been filled for courses like BA (H) geography, social work, Hindi patrakarita, BCom (H) and BCom.

Many BA, BSc seats are vacancy at Deshbandhu College, 16 seats are vacant at Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar College. BA and BCom has always been the most preferred course at Delhi University. During this year’s admission portal witnessed most number of applications on the Common Seat Allocation System, CSAS portal.

The admission process this year was on the basis of scores secured in CUET or Common University Entrance Test. Earlier the admission used to be on the basis of Board exam scores. Report suggest that many teachers of the Delhi University contended that the new system of admission has not been able to plug this gap.

TOI quoted Pankaj Garg, a mathematics teacher at Rajdhani College saying, “Earlier we used to admit around 30% extra students keeping in mind the dropouts. However, this year, in the maths department out of 78 seats there are only 67 students and by second year the number will reduce. Especially in science courses we have struggled to fill seats.” He further told TOI that the trend was mostly in outer campus colleges. He said, “This year there was delayed admission and CUET has not worked as far admissions are concerned. Proper counselling of students was not done, which is why several students from rural areas were unaware about a lot of technicalities. The process has actually adversely affected the colleges.”
Candidates can go to the official website of Delhi University to check the vacant seat status and other details related to admission.

20/12/2022

The names of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Arun Jaitley, Amartya Sen, and Savitri Bai Phule are among the personalities that have been discussed as possibilities for naming upcoming Delhi University colleges and centres after.

Delhi University’s Executive Council had last year passed a resolution that the upcoming colleges and centres may be named after Swami Vivekananda, Sushma Swaraj, V D Savarkar, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

In response to a question in the Lok Sabha on this decision, the Ministry of Education Monday submitted other names were also suggested. “The Council also suggested to consider the names of Atal Bihari Bajpai, Savitri Bai Phule, Arun Jaitley, Choudhary Brahm Prakash, C.D. Deshmukh and Prof. Amartya Sen and resolved that the Vice- Chancellor be authorized to finalize the name,” states the response.

Congress MP from Kerala, Kodikunnil Suresh had raised a question in the Lok Sabha on this decision asking if the government proposes to revisit the “policy of naming colleges after individuals with contested legacies” or “promulgate a standard benchmark for the process with Standard operating Procedure to avoid supra-policy decisions by the executive councils of universities”.

The ministry responded to the question posed by Suresh saying DU is competent to take all academic and administrative decisions with the approval of its statutory bodies.

Delhi University is working on setting up two facilitation centres to cater to the needs and requirements of students staying in far-flung areas of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) as the first steps towards starting new colleges. The two centres are proposed to be set up on the plots of land allotted to DU in Najafgarh and Fatehpur Beri.

28/10/2022

Restricted entry at fests, no events without prior police permission and adequate volunteer deployment – these are part of the guidelines issued by Delhi University to all its colleges for holding events. The advisory was issued around two weeks after several men allegedly jumped over the walls of Miranda House during a Diwali fair to enter the campus by bypassing security.

The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit at Miranda House had organised a Diwali Mela on October 14 which was open to everyone with a valid student ID. While the college authorities said they had taken some precautions such as deploying some police personnel at every gate, they were overwhelmed by the large number of students from other colleges who turned up for the event. When security closed the gate to stop more people from entering the campus, several male students allegedly jumped over the college gates and walls to enter the campus.

The police registered an FIR in the matter and the college issued an emergency standard operating procedure (SOP) for events at the time, but now the Delhi University proctor’s office has issued guidelines to all colleges and departments for events.

They state that college and department fests “should not be opened for all” and that “only the entry of a few college/department students should be allowed”. They also state that entry should only be allowed for events after registrations against college IDs. The guidelines say that no events should be organised without “proper permission of police” or at least a day’s prior intimation should be given to the Maurice Nagar police station, in case of lack of time.

Colleges are also required to deploy volunteers at the time of events with police being notified about the number of volunteers. The university has told colleges that if any of the guidelines are not followed “then the concerned college/department is solely responsible for any untoward incident happened during any event organised”.

26/10/2022

Delhi University on Tuesday completed round one of its undergraduate admissions under the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) during which nearly 59,100 candidates secured their admissions by paying the admission fee. The university said that it will display the details about its available seats on Wednesday at 10 a.m., well before round two is scheduled to begin on October 30.

The candidates who have secured their admission in round one can opt for an “upgrade” option and reorder their higher college + programme preference from 10 a.m. on Wednesday till 4.59 p.m. on Thursday.

“The candidates who opt for upgradation will be automatically upgraded based on the allocation policy of CSAS. If a new preference is allocated, the claim for earlier seat admitted stands forfeited automatically leading to its auto-cancellation,” Vikas Gupta Registrar of Delhi University said.

He added that it was important for candidates who are making use of the “upgrade” option to accept the upgraded seat and complete the admission procedures within the stipulated time frame.

Delhi University this year has done away with the cut-off system and is admitting students based on their Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores via the CSAS portal. Applicants were asked to list their college + programme combinations in order of preference while registering on the portal. To be eligible for an upgrade, the applicant should have secured a seat allotted.
