This is a tortoise beetle larva, and that disgusting-looking mass on its back is actually a defensive shield made from its own waste.

This tiny worm has one of the strangest hunting weapons in nature. 🪱
The velvet worm looks harmless, but when a small insect gets too close, it can suddenly fire two streams of sticky slime from the glands beside its head. The slime spreads across the prey, forming a tangled adhesive trap that becomes harder to escape as the insect struggles.
Once the prey is immobilized, the velvet worm can bite and feed.
And the strangest part? The slime is mostly water and proteins, yet it can transform into strong, sticky fibers within seconds.

Meet the pearlfish, one of the strangest fish in the ocean. Instead of hiding in rocks or coral, some pearlfish enter a sea cucumber through its rear opening and use its body as a shelter.
During the day, the pearlfish can remain inside, protected from predators. When night arrives, it comes back out to hunt before returning to its unusual hiding place.
But there's an even stranger twist: while some pearlfish are harmless guests, certain species can behave as parasites and feed on the sea cucumber's internal tissues.

Meet the archerfish , one of nature's most incredible hunters. It uses a powerful jet of water to knock insects from branches above the surface. But hitting such a tiny target isn't as simple as it looks. Because light bends when it passes through the water's surface, the insect appears to be in a different position from underwater. The archerfish has to compensate for this distortion, aim precisely, and fire.
Then the water projectile travels through the air before smashing into its target.

This Bird Uses Its Own Shadow to Catch Fish 😳

This is the black heron, and it has one of the strangest fishing techniques in nature. It spreads its wings like an umbrella, creating a shadow over the water. That shade reduces glare, helps the heron see fish more clearly, and can even make the darkness look like a safe hiding place to small fish.
The fish swim into the shade… straight toward the predator waiting inside.
The black heron doesn't chase its prey. It makes the prey come to it.
