The Government has fact-checked media reports, clarifying that there will be no "cigarette-like" health warnings on samosas and jalebis.
The Press Information Bureau stated:
"Some media reports claim that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued a health warning on food products such as samosas, jalebi, and laddoo. This claim is . The advisory of the Union Health Ministry does not carry any warning labels on food products sold by vendors and has not been selective towards Indian snacks."
It added:
"The general advisory is a behavioural nudge to make people aware of hidden fats and excess sugar in all food products, and not specifically directed at any particular item. The advisory promotes healthier options and initiatives at workplaces and urges people to make informed choices to reduce excess oil and sugar for better health. It does not target India's rich street food culture."
Most major national news organizations had reported this misinformation.
