A school-going minor girl, identified as Miss Lamboikim, a Class VIII student of Radhakrishnan Foundation School and a resident of K. Khomunnom village, was swept away by flash floodwaters in Tuibong, Churachandpur, on Thursday amid heavy rainfall.

The incident occurred while she was returning home from school. According to reports, she accidentally stepped into a roadside drain submerged under floodwater, which had become indistinguishable from the footpath and was carried away by the strong current.

An extensive search operation has since been underway along the Tuitha River, led by the Kuki Khanglai Lawpi (KKL), Kuki Students Organisation (KSO), local youth clubs and several philanthropic organisations, including the Hmar Youth Association.

Despite the ongoing efforts by volunteers, local leaders alleged that no assistance had been received from the District Disaster Response Force (DDRF) or the district administration. Volunteers have reportedly relied on makeshift rafts to navigate the strong river in their search for the missing girl.

The incident has also raised concerns over inadequate civic infrastructure and the effectiveness of disaster response mechanisms in the district.

Suspected NSCN-IM (EF) cadres reportedly attacked and set fire to Kultuh Kuki village in Kamjong district early Thursday morning.

According to reports, the attack claimed the lives of the Head Deacon of Kultuh Church and the Chairman of the Youth Department.

The continued acts of violence against civilians have gone too far. No ideology, grievance or cause can ever justify the killing of civilians. Whoever is responsible for these heinous acts must be identified, brought to justice and punished in accordance with the law. Peace cannot thrive where impunity prevails.
