Punjab FC struck twice late in the injury-time to defeat Mumbai City FC 3-0 in its concluding Group C match of the 133rd Durand Cup at the Kishore Bharati Stadium on Sunday. Norwegian forward Mushaga Bakenga struck twice, including an injury-time penalty, while Croatian midfielder Filip Mrzljak scored once to complete Punjab FC’s dominance over Mumbai City FC, which fielded a young side primarily sourced from its reserve team.The win saw Punjab FC finishing its group league engagements tied with Kerala Blasters on seven points but the latter took the top spot in the final standings for having a superior goal difference. Kerala Blasters qualified to the quarterfinals while Punjab FC remained the best second placed team currently in the tournament. The Shers will now have to wait for the results of the other matches to confirm its place in the knockouts as two group runners-up will move into the last-eight stage.Chennaiyin FC found the winner in the injury-time to beat Assam Rifles Football Team 2-1 in a Group D match at the JRD Tata Sports Complex stadium, Jamshedpur and ended its campaign on a positive note. Jefferson Nongrud put Assam Rifles in the lead in the 76th minute before Romario Jesuraj found the equaliser from an 89th minute penalty. Praful nodded home a corner essayed by Vishal to find the winning goal in the last minute of the injury-time. We recently reported that Shah Rukh Khan has been feted with a lifetime achievement award at the Locarno Film Festival 2024 in Switzerland. The prestigious Pardo Alla Carriera Award was given to him for his contribution to cinema. At the event, Khan confirmed that his next film is King and shared a few details on the same. While speaking to Artistic Director of the Locarno Film Festival, Giona A. Nazzaro during a live interaction, Khan said, “I finished Jawan and Dunki last year. Now, there’s a certain kind of film I want to do. Maybe it is more age-centric and its something I have been trying for over 7 years. One day, I mentioned it to Sujoy Ghosh in my office. He said, ‘Sir, I have a subject.’”Adding more on how he picks his films, the veteran actor said, “It’s very simple. I have a desire to do a genre; could be comedy, courtroom drama, or social. I just put it out in the air, I meet a couple of people, some of them have a subject, I hear it, I spend time with them and we just go ahead and make the film.”Speaking about his upcoming film, he said, “The next film I’m doing, King, I have to start working on it. Have to lose some weight and stretch a little so my groin doesn’t get caught while I am doing action. It’s very painful and hurtful. I have two bags full of icing machines. It’s the worst thing to see me on set after action. I look really cool in the film, but after that, I look tied up, somebody is pressing my back. It’s difficult to walk and then suddenly you see people and send them flying kisses.”More details on the upcoming film are expected to be announced soon. According to reports, King will also star Khan’s daughter, Suhana Khan, marking their first collaboration together. The young actor recently made her acting debut with Zoya Akhtar’s The Archies along with Boney Kapoor and Sridevi’s daughter Khushi Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan’s grandson Agastya Nanda, among others.Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan, who voiced Mufasa in the Hindi-dubbed version of 2019’s live-action The Lion King, is returning to voice the character in director Barry Jenkins’ Mufasa: The Lion Kingwhich releases in India on 20th December 2024 in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Interestingly, the actor’s sons A***n and AbRam are also a part of the film; A***n is voicing Simba while AbRam will voice young Mufasa.

Hong Kong's top court on Monday (August 12, 2024) upheld the convictions of seven of Hong Kong's most prominent pro-democracy activists over their roles in one of the biggest anti-government protests in 2019. Jimmy Lai, founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily newspaper; Martin Lee, the founding chairman of the city’s Democratic Party; and five former pro-democracy lawmakers were found guilty in 2021 of organizing and participating in an unauthorized assembly. Their convictions dealt a blow to the city's flagging pro-democracy movement during a political crackdown on dissidents following the protests. Last year, the activists partially won their appeal at a lower court, with their convictions quashed over the charge of organizing an unauthorized assembly. But their convictions over taking part in the assembly were upheld and they continued their legal battle at the city's top court. On Monday, judges at the Court of Final Appeal unanimously ruled against their appeal over the remaining convictions. The defendants previously argued that the trial judge had failed to conduct an “operational proportionality” assessment when convicting them and quoted two non-binding decisions set out by the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. The defense also suggested the judge should have taken into account that the procession did not become violent.But Chief Justice Andrew Cheung and Justice Roberto Ribeiro said in their written judgment that the two British cases should not be adopted in the city's courts because the frameworks for human rights challenges in the two jurisdictions are different. They ruled that the defendants' proposition was “unsustainable" and "is contrary to all established principles governing constitutional challenges in Hong Kong.”“A separate proportionality inquiry in relation to arrest, prosecution, conviction and sentence is inappropriate and un-called for,” they wrote.After the court handed down its decision, barrister Margaret Ng, one of the defendants, declined to comment before reading the judgment. “We just want to take this occasion to thank our legal teams, and all the people who have been supporting us all the time,” she said.The convictions were linked to their involvement in a rally in August 2019 that drew an estimated 1.7 million people onto Hong Kong’s streets to call for greater police accountability and democracy. The march was relatively peaceful compared to other protests that often morphed into violent clashes between police and protesters that year.Hong Kong, a former British colony, returned to China in 1997. Its mini-constitution, the Basic Law, guarantees its people freedom of assembly.When sentencing the seven activists in 2021, the trial judge at the District Court ruled that the right to such freedom is not absolute and is subject to restrictions ruled constitutional. She ordered Lai, Lee Cheuk-yan, Leung Kwok-hung and Cyd Ho to be jailed between eight and 18 months. Martin Lee, Ng and Albert Ho were given suspended jail sentences.When the appellate court partially overturned their convictions in 2023, it quashed part of the sentences for the four who were given jail terms on the record. The decision was made after they already served out their sentences. Mr. Lai, Mr. Lee Cheuk-yan, Mr. Leung and Albert Ho still remained in custody as they were also prosecuted or convicted under a Beijing-imposed national security law, which critics said has all but wiped out public dissent. Lai was also serving a prison term for a separate fraud case. The Beijing and Hong Kong governments said the security law was necessary to bring back stability to the city following the protests.The movement five years ago was the city’s most concerted challenge to the Hong Kong government since the 1997 handover. It waned with massive arrests and exiles of democracy activists, the COVID-19 pandemic and the introduction of the security law.

The rupee witnessed range-bound trading in initial deals against the US dollar on Monday (August 12, 2024), as market participants remained on the sidelines ahead of the release of key domestic macroeconomic data. Forex traders said for the USD/INR pair 84.00 level is acting as a psychological resistance. Market participants are also awaiting cues from the Indian CPI inflation and IIP numbers scheduled to be released later in the day. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 83.95 against the greenback and traded in a tight range. In initial trade it touched 83.96, registering a fall of 1 paisa over its previous close. On Friday, the rupee settled for the day higher by 2 paise at 83.95 against US dollar. "The Indian rupee is expected to be calm as the Reserve Bank continues to buy dollars at lower levels and sell a smaller quantity to keep rupee in a small range," Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP said. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) seems to be protecting 83.96 for now. Market also awaits for US CPI inflation data on Wednesday, Bhansali added. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.08 per cent higher at 103.22. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, advanced 0.18 per cent to USD 79.80 per barrel. On the domestic equity market front, Sensex declined 269.65 points, or 0.34 per cent, to 79,436.26 points. The Nifty fell 74.65 points, or 0.31 per cent, to 24,292.85 points. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital markets on Friday as they purchased shares worth ₹406.72 crore, according to exchange data. Meanwhile, India's forex reserves jumped by USD 7.533 billion to a new record high of USD 674.919 billion for the week ended August 2, the Reserve Bank said on Friday (August 9, 2024).

Kolkata Murder: Resident doctors are protesting across IndiaNew Delhi: Doctors of several hospitals across India have announced an indefinite strike to protest against the gruesome r**e and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital. Doctors in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and several other cities have announced that all elective services would be halted till a probe is completed in the case. The protesters are also demanding adequate security for all medical staff.The announcement comes days after a postgraduate trainee doctor was r**ed and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata while on duty.The body of the 32-year-old woman was found in the seminar hall of the government-run hospital in the West Bengal capital on Thursday night. The initial autopsy report stated that the victim was bleeding from her eyes, mouth and private parts. There were also injuries on her left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger and lips.City Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal visited the medical establishment on Sunday for the second time in three days and held a meeting with representatives of agitating junior doctors.He claimed the probe is "transparent" and urged people not to spread rumours.Police have arrested one person in the case, a civic volunteer who is not associated with the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, but used to frequent the place.The man, Sanjoy Roy, had returned to his place and went to sleep before washing his clothes the next morning to destroy evidence, a police officer probing the case claimed.
