Abhisar Sharma Dismisses FIR by Guwahati Police as ‘Baseless’, Vows Legal Fight

Sting Newz Desk: Journalist and YouTuber Abhisar Sharma on August 21 strongly rejected the FIR filed against him by Guwahati Police, calling it “completely baseless,” and asserted that he would fight the case through legal means.

According to officials, the crime branch lodged the FIR accusing Sharma of ridiculing the Assam and Union governments and promoting religious enmity in one of his YouTube videos.

“The FIR filed against me by is completely baseless. It will be responded to legally!” Sharma posted on X.

Explaining the context, Sharma said his video referred to a judge’s observation regarding the Assam government’s decision to allot 3,000 bighas of land to Mahabal Cement, which he criticised. He added that he also highlighted Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s “communal politics with facts” based on the CM’s own statements. Sharma even shared the link to the video in question.

The FIR has been registered under Sections 152 (acts endangering sovereignty, unity and integrity of India), 196 (promoting enmity between groups), and 197 (imputations prejudicial to national integration) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Section 152 has replaced the repealed sedition law.

The development comes close on the heels of Guwahati Police summoning senior journalists Siddharth Varadarajan and Karan Thapar in separate cases under similar provisions of the BNS. Both were directed to appear on August 22.

The FIR against Sharma was filed based on a complaint by Alok Baruah (23), a resident of Nayanpur, Ganeshguri, who alleged that Sharma’s remarks were made with mala fide intent to malign the elected governments at both the Centre and in Assam. The complaint also accused him of mocking the principle of Ram Rajya and claiming that the government “survives only on Hindu-Muslim polarisation.”
