Practical steps to Disciple and Self Control- Day 1

Have you ever felt frustrated by your inability to get a grip or move forward? Maybe you have a dream of something you want to accomplish, but you’ve hit a wall – you feel mired in procrastination or lack of motivation. Maybe you want to lose weight or get in shape, but you can’t seem to develop a habit of eating right or exercising, and never seem to make headway.

Maybe your head is full of “coulda, woulda, shoulda” thoughts, but you just can’t seem to get over the hump to do what you really want to do – what you know the Holy Spirit is nudging you to do. You’re just not where you want to be, and you feel lazy, uninspired and guilty.

There are plenty of areas in our lives where we might want be more disciplined, self-controlled and productive. Here are some examples where we might have said, “I wish I was more disciplined in…”

·Exercising and eating right

·Taking steps toward the dream

·Cleaning the house…decluttering (attacking the junk room, keeping the office or kids room clean, organizing the closet, whatever!)

·Spending money

·Sleep/Rest

·Staying in touch with family or friends

·Spending daily time with God

·Promptly obeying God’s direction, not hesitating…

If you’ve ever had any of those thoughts, I have some good news. The discipline and self-control you need to reach these goals is already inside you!

When you said yes to Jesus – when you got born again and became a new creature in Christ (2 Cor 5:17) – the Holy Spirit came to make His home in you (John 14:16-17) and He brought along every fruit (every characteristic) of His being. The Bible calls those characteristics the Fruit of the Spirit.

One of those fruits is self-control…and it’s in you. I want you think about that. It’s not something you’re trying to get – it’s something you already have. That’s a whole different mindset than “I need to get more disciplined, more self-control.” The Bible says you already have it. The Fruit of the Spirit and the Greater One are in you (1 John 4:4) – you can get a grip!

But even knowing that, you might be thinking, “Uh huh, sure. But there’s no sign of it in my life! How do I start to act more disciplined and self-controlled?” The answer is: you have to learn to yield to it.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5‬:‭22‬-‭23‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Core Habit #1
Engage the Bible

Reading or listening to absorb the Bible is crucial for spiritual growth. Donald Whitney, a leading teacher on spiritual disciples, writes, “No Spiritual Discipline is more important than the intake of God’s Word. Nothing can substitute for it. There simply is no healthy Christian life apart from a diet of the milk and meat of Scripture.”

The late philanthropist and pastor George Müller said something similar: “The vigor of our spiritual life will be in exact proportion to the place held by the Bible in our life and thoughts.”

This habit may seem scary at first. Shrink the challenge, and make it small enough that you’re confident you can succeed.

Getting started isn’t as hard as you might think. I’ll give you some tips tomorrow, but here are some guidelines to build the habit of engaging the Bible.

Choose a format. If you’re an auditory learner, consider listening to the Bible. If you prefer to read, that’s great too. We’ll dig into some options tomorrow, but think about how you enjoy learning for now.
Choose a goal. Again, be realistic. Listening to the Bible in a year takes around 75 hours, which works out to less than 15 minutes a day for a year. Reading the Bible over two years takes only 7–8 minutes a day. This option is great for people who’ve never read the Bible before. Another great option is to select one book of the Bible to read and reread for a while (one to three months or more), allowing the book to soak deep into your heart.
Practice. David Mathis says it well: “At the end of the day, there is simply no replacement for finding a regular time and place, blocking out distractions, putting your nose in the text, and letting your mind and heart be led and captured and thrilled by God himself communicating to us in his objective written words.”
Don’t give up. Many people quit if they miss a day or two. You can avoid this mistake by using the clean slate policy. No guilt, no shame. Just start where you are, do what you can, and carry on.

Jesus wants to heal your sick body just as much as He wants to save your soul.

Our love for the Lord depends on how much we realise we have been forgiven. Many Christians have a false humility that makes them say, “I am the greatest of sinners.” If you really believe that about yourself, then you should be loving the Lord more than anyone else. He who is forgiven much should love much.

But many who claim to be the chief of sinners are often in the pursuit of more money and not living for the Lord. They are then just using pious language to get a reputation for humility! Don’t ever say you are “the chief of sinners” unless, like Paul, you are willing to forsake everything for Christ’s sake. If you have been forgiven much, you will love much.

If you have given up only little for the Lord, it proves that you believe that you have been forgiven only very little.

It was Abraham’s willingness to go anywhere and to do anything at any time for God that made him the “Friend of God.”
