Tiwa Language to Be Introduced in Primary Schools of Karbi Anglong, A Landmark Step by KAAC.
Diphu, July 16:
In a historic and culturally significant decision, the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) has passed a resolution to introduce Tiwa as a medium of instruction at the foundational stage in primary schools under its jurisdiction. This landmark move was approved during the Executive Committee (Cabinet) meeting held under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Tuliram Ronghang , Hon’ble Chief Executive Member (CEM) of KAAC.
This development marks a major milestone in the preservation and promotion of indigenous languages, especially for the Tiwa community, whose language and cultural identity have long awaited formal recognition in the educational system.
Hon’ble Executive Member Shri D Uphing Maslai expressed his heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Tuliram Ronghang for fulfilling the commitment made towards indigenous language inclusion. Acting on Hon'ble EM Shri D.Uphing Maslai’s guidance, the Tiwa Sahitya Sabha had earlier submitted a memorandum requesting the introduction of Tiwa language in primary education. The approval of this request now sets the foundation for future generations of Tiwa students to learn in their mother tongue.
According to the resolution, Tiwa will be introduced starting from ‘Ka Shreni’ (the foundational grade) in selected Lower Primary (L.P.) schools. Initially, this will be implemented in 40 Tiwa-dominated schools across Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts, beginning within the current academic session.
In his statement, Hon'ble EM Shri. D.Uphing Maslai extended his sincere thanks to the CEM Dr Tuliram Ronghang for his unwavering support and commitment toward safeguarding tribal identities and languages, including Tiwa, Karbi, and Dimasa.
This initiative is seen as a significant step in the broader effort to strengthen multilingual education and ensure cultural continuity among the indigenous tribes of Assam.
