50th Anniversary of the Emergency (June 25, 1975 – A Black Day in Indian Democracy)
"Darkness fell on the world’s largest democracy" – these were the words spoken by many across the globe when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of the Congress Party imposed Emergency Rule on June 25, 1975, suspending civil liberties, crushing the free press, and jailing opposition voices without trial.
🚫 Fundamental rights were suspended.
📰 Newspapers were censored.
🪖 Dissent was branded as disloyalty.
🔒 Thousands of political leaders, activists, journalists, and students were thrown behind bars – many without trial.
Why does this matter today?
Because democracy is not a gift – it's a responsibility. We must remember how easily it can be taken away when power becomes absolute and opposition is crushed.
NEVER FORGET. NEVER FORGIVE.
On the 50th anniversary, we salute the courage of those who resisted tyranny and upheld the spirit of the Constitution.
