2nd Aama Samman Diwas and 9th Jan Unmukti Diwas Observed at Rangpo
Rangpo, August 10, 2026: The 2nd Aama Samman Diwas and 9th Jan Unmukti Diwas were observed at Rangpo on Monday in a deeply meaningful celebration dedicated to the mothers of Sikkim. Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang attended the programme as the Chief Guest.
The occasion brought together mothers from different parts of the state, along with the Hon’ble Speaker, Ministers, MLAs, senior government officials, elected representatives, SKM party functionaries, volunteers and people from across Sikkim.
Mothers travelled from far-flung parts of the state to be part of the celebration. Their presence, smiles and blessings gave the occasion its emotional character. The warmth with which they were welcomed and cared for throughout the programme added a personal and human dimension to what was otherwise a large public event.
One of the key announcements of the day was the expansion of the Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana.
The scheme, which currently covers around 32,000 beneficiaries, will be expanded to 50,000 beneficiaries from 2027. The move is aimed at bringing more mothers under the scheme and extending financial support to families across the state.
As part of the programme, 10 mothers from each Assembly Constituency received cheques under the Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana. The remaining beneficiaries will receive their assistance through their respective MLAs at the concerned BAC offices within this month. The expansion reflects the government’s stated commitment to ensuring that more mothers are able to benefit from financial assistance and opportunities for greater self-reliance.
The celebration also recognised mothers who have used the assistance they received to create opportunities and improve their livelihoods.
The Pragatisheel Aama Puraskar was awarded to three mothers, Indra Lepcha of Kaluk Bazaar received the first prize of ₹5 lakh. Gauri Pradhan of Linkey Parakha received the second prize of ₹3 lakh. Sancha Rani Limboo of Mangshila Tibuk received the third prize of ₹2 lakh.
The awards recognised mothers who demonstrated initiative and made productive use of the support provided under the Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana.
The Aama Samman Puraskar and Best Aama Account Holder Awards were also presented, further recognising mothers for their achievements, discipline and contribution to their families and communities.
The programme also highlighted several initiatives aimed at strengthening social welfare and supporting families and communities. Among those highlighted were Aama Sahayog Yojana, Bahini Yojana and Mero Rukh Mero Santati, along with the regularisation of Anganwadi and ASHA workers. Support for 200 Self Help Groups, provisions for sabbatical leave, the Shravan Kumar Puraskar and Aama Ko Goad in Siliguri for patients were also highlighted.
Another initiative announced during the programme was the introduction of Aama Poetry Competitions in schools and colleges from July 1, 2027. The initiative is intended to encourage younger generations to express and cultivate respect and appreciation for their mothers.
The significance of the occasion was heightened by the fact that Aama Samman Diwas was observed alongside Jan Unmukti Diwas. While Jan Unmukti Diwas represents a journey of emancipation and the aspirations of the people, Aama Samman Diwas is centred on recognising the dignity, strength and contribution of mothers.
The coming together of the two occasions offered a simple but powerful message: progress is meaningful when it improves people’s lives, and development is meaningful when it is accompanied by dignity, compassion and care.
The event was made possible through the collective efforts of government departments, district administrations, security personnel, SBS, Roads and Bridges, NHIDCL, SKM functionaries, Youth Wing and Nari Wing members, Contractor Association, Chalak (Sarathi) Wing, volunteers and numerous individuals who worked both publicly and behind the scenes.
For those present, the most memorable part of the day was perhaps not the announcements or ceremonies, but seeing mothers from across Sikkim come together, feel welcomed and return home with smiles and cherished memories. The 2nd Aama Samman Diwas thus became more than a government programme. It was a public expression of gratitude towards the women who form the foundation of families and communities across Sikkim.
The occasion reaffirmed the vision of building a Sunaulo Sikkim, Samriddha Sikkim and Saamarth Sikkim, a Sikkim where every Aama feels respected, every family feels secure and no one is left behind.
