Apektsha chettri from ravangla becomes Sikkim topper in NEET 2025 examination

Apektsha Chettri, daughter of Bhagirath Chettri and Durga Devi Chettri from Deythang, Ravangla in Namchi district, has made Sikkim proud by becoming the state topper in the NEET 2025 examination.

She secured an impressive All India Rank of 20,438, emerging as the highest scorer from Sikkim in this year’s national-level medical entrance test.

A Moment of Pride: Isha Chettri Chosen for ISRO's YUVIKA 2025 Programme
In a remarkable achievement for the state of Sikkim, Ms. Isha Chettri, a bright and promising student from the serene Himalayan village of Hee-Yangthang, has earned a prestigious spot in ISRO’s Young Scientist Programme - YUVIKA 2025. This national initiative, designed to ignite young minds toward space science and technology, is a testament to Isha’s dedication and talent.

A 9th-grade student at Hee-Yangthang Senior Secondary School, Isha is the daughter of Mr. Yuvraj Chettri and Ms. Preeti Maya Chettri. Her selection from a highly competitive pool of students nationwide has filled her family, teachers, and entire school community with immense pride.

The YUVIKA 2025 programme, held from May 19 to 30 at the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) in Hyderabad, offers students an exclusive opportunity to engage with ISRO scientists, engineers, and experts, fostering their interest in space research. Participants will visit laboratories, undertake project work, and experience hands-on training sessions in advanced space technologies.

Located in Balanagar, Hyderabad, the NRSC campus is approximately 11 kilometers from Secunderabad Railway Station, with special travel arrangements made for attendees.

Isha’s outstanding success has been celebrated by the entire school fraternity, led by Principal Mr. Narayan Basnet, teachers, and fellow students, who extend their warmest congratulations and best wishes for her future endeavors. Jigmee Dorjee Bhutia Successfully Defends Ph.D. Thesis at Sikkim University

Gangtok, May : Jigmee Dorjee Bhutia, a resident of Simik Lingzey, Pengyong B***y, Khamdong, East Sikkim, has successfully defended his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) thesis in History from the Department of History, Sikkim Central University on May 5, 2025.

His doctoral research, titled “The Traditional Medicine and Spiritual Healing Practices in Sikkim During Nineteenth and Twentieth Century: A Study of its Continuity,” explores the evolution and persistence of indigenous healing traditions in Sikkim amid historical and colonial transitions.

Under the supervision of Dr. Anira Phipon Lepcha, Assistant Professor at the Department of History, Bhutia’s research examined traditional medicinal and spiritual practices among the Lepcha, Bhutia, and Nepali communities, analyzing their adaptation and survival alongside modern biomedicine. His work sheds light on how spiritual healers, monks, Amchis, and traditional medicine practitioners continue to play a crucial role in community healthcare even today.

Bhutia’s academic journey has been marked by consistent excellence. After completing his early education in East and South Sikkim, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in History Honours from Nar Bahadur Bhandari Degree College, Gangtok. He later pursued his Master’s and M.Phil degrees in History from Sikkim Central University, receiving a Silver Medal during the university’s Fifth Convocation for his outstanding performance in post-graduation. His M.Phil dissertation, “British Influences on Folk Medicine and Healing Practices in Sikkim,” laid the foundation for his doctoral work.

Currently serving as a Guest Faculty member in the Department of History at Sikkim University, Bhutia has also contributed to academic discourse through various national and international conference presentations and publications in peer-reviewed journals. He is a recipient of both the Junior and Senior Research Fellowships awarded by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, and was also selected for the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) Junior Research Fellowship.

In his acknowledgements, Bhutia expressed deep gratitude to his supervisor, Dr. Anira Phipon Lepcha, the faculty of the History Department, and the many traditional healers and experts who contributed to his research. He also thanked his family—his mother, Lhanzom Bhutia, and sisters, Seden Lhamu and Kiki Lhamu Bhutia—for their unwavering support.

His remarkable academic and research achievements are a testament to his dedication to preserving and understanding Sikkim’s rich cultural and medicinal heritage.

Dr. Mecal Ongmu Lepcha Awarded PhD in Education from Sikkim University

Dr. Mecal Ongmu Lepcha, a resident of Gangtok and daughter of Mr. Yusen Lepcha and Mrs. Sangita Lepcha of Rungdung, Rhenock, has been awarded the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education from Sikkim University on 23rd of April, 2025. Her research was supervised by Prof. Yodida Bhutia, Head of the Department of Education and Dean of the School of Professional Studies, whose mentorship was pivotal to her study.
Dr. Lepcha’s thesis, “Women of Sikkim Pursuing Higher Education: Challenges and Coping Strategies,” is a Qualitative, Narrative study grounded in a Feminist Framework with a focus on Intersectionality. The research explores how overlapping identities- such as gender, ethnicity, class, geography, marital status etc. shape the educational experiences of women from Sikkim, both within and outside the state. The study also examines the patriarchal structures that challenges women’s access to higher education and highlights their diverse coping strategies for overcoming these barriers.
Currently serving as an Assistant Professor at Sikkim Government B.Ed. College, Soreng,
Dr. Lepcha holds degrees in English and Education, including B.Ed, M.Ed, M.A. (English
& Education), M.Phil, and has qualified UGC-NET. She has contributed several articles to reputed journals and participated in numerous national and international seminars. Dr. Lepcha is also the author of two published books in the areas of tribal studies, and inclusive education. Her academic interests further include women’s studies, and mental health.

Dr. Lepcha expresses her heartfelt gratitude to her supervisor, Prof. Yodida Bhutia, for her
valuable guidance, encouragement, and belief in her work. She also thanks to each women
students of Sikkim who participated in the study, and the Principal of Sikkim Government
B.Ed. College, Soreng, for her support. Dr. Lepcha is deeply thankful to her parents, family members, husband Yehang Tshong, his family, and all her friends, colleagues, and well-wishers for their constant encouragement throughout her academic journey.

Gangtok, May 4, 2025 — Adding another feather to Sikkim’s growing prominence in Indian cinema, Ms. Uma Giri has been honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Film Foundation Award 2025 for Best Actress in the Nepalese language and Nepal section.

The award was presented during the grand celebration of the 156th Dadasaheb Phalke Jayanti held on 3rd May 2025 at the Mukesh Patel Auditorium, Vile Parle (W), Mumbai.
