Lepcha Musicians Make India Book of Records Attempt with Mass Tungbuk Performance

A historic moment in Sikkim as Lepcha musicians come together to attempt the India Book of Records for the maximum number of people playing the traditional Tungbuk at a single venue.

The Tungbuk, a traditional three-stringed musical instrument of the Lepcha community, is a cherished symbol of Sikkim’s rich indigenous heritage and cultural identity. The instrument was recently granted the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

The record attempt aims to celebrate, preserve and promote the unique musical heritage of the Lepcha community while showcasing Sikkim’s rich cultural traditions on a national platform.

Yongthoom 3rd Edition Concludes with Grand Closing Ceremony at Ridge Park

The Yongthoom 3rd Edition, organised as part of the Tendong Lho Rum Faat celebrations, concluded with a grand closing ceremony at Ridge Park, Gangtok.

The ceremony was graced by Governor Shri Om Prakash Mathur as the Chief Guest, in the presence of Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang, Ministers, MLAs, senior government officials, and other dignitaries.

The three-day celebration showcased the rich cultural heritage, traditional practices, handicrafts, indigenous cuisine, and artistic traditions of the Lepcha community, drawing a large number of visitors and providing a vibrant platform for preserving and promoting Sikkim’s indigenous culture.

🇮🇳🇨🇳 Historic Nathula Pass Border Trade Resumes After Nearly Six Years

Border trade between India and China through the historic Nathula Pass in East Sikkim has resumed today, marking the reopening of the centuries-old Silk Route after a nearly six-year suspension.

The trade route remained closed since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent border tensions. Its reopening is expected to bring renewed economic opportunities for registered traders, transport operators and local businesses dependent on cross-border commerce.

A formal reopening ceremony is scheduled to be held at Nathula, with officials from both India and China expected to participate. The development is being seen as a positive step towards strengthening economic cooperation and improving bilateral relations between the two neighbouring countries.

Located at an altitude of over 14,000 feet, Nathula Pass has historical significance as part of the ancient Silk Route. Border trade was officially reopened here in 2006, after remaining closed for more than four decades following the 1962 India-China conflict.

The revival of trade is expected to benefit registered traders from Sikkim and Tibet, facilitate the exchange of approved goods under the bilateral border trade framework, and create fresh opportunities for communities along the Himalayan frontier.
