Press Club of Sikkim Condemns Disrespectful Remarks on Nepali Language
Gangtok, August 19: The Press Club of Sikkim has strongly condemned abusive remarks made by Raj Shekhar, a student at Sikkim University, against the Nepali language. The matter came to light after Shekhar, in an official university WhatsApp group, allegedly referred to Nepali as a “foreign language” and advised those wishing to speak it to “go to Nepal.”
In its official statement, the Press Club said such comments are not only irresponsible and insensitive but also an insult to the constitutional recognition, rich cultural identity, and historical contributions of Nepali-speaking citizens of India.
The Club emphasized that Nepali is among the national languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. It noted that Nepali-speaking Indian citizens have made invaluable contributions across literature, administration, education, sports, social development, and in the defense and security of the nation.
“Labeling the Nepali language as foreign reflects ignorance and a divisive mentality,” said Pankaj Dhungel, Publicity Secretary of the Press Club of Sikkim.
The statement also urged the Sikkim University administration to take appropriate action against Raj Shekhar and demanded that he issue a public apology to the Nepali-speaking community.
