The Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA), 2002 was a stringent anti-terror law enacted by the Parliament of India under the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.

Formulated in the wake of the September 11 attacks in the US and the December 2001 attack on the Indian Parliament, its primary objective was to drastically strengthen counter-terrorism operations across the country.

Key Features and Strict Provisions

POTA granted law enforcement and investigating agencies extraordinary legal powers that bypassed regular criminal procedures:

Longer Detention Without Charge: Authorities could detain suspects for up to 180 days without filing a formal charge sheet.

Admissibility of Confessions: Confessions made to a police officer (not below the rank of Superintendent) were admissible as evidence in court, a major departure from the standard Indian Evidence Act.
