The establishment of IIM Guwahati—made official via the passing of the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill—marks the second IIM in the Northeast after IIM Shillong. It carries deep regional significance, having originated as a core project under the Special Development Package (SDP) tied to the historic Tripartite Memorandum of Settlement signed between the Centre, the Assam Government, and the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA). Backed by a ₹550-crore central financial outlay, the project is moving swiftly; while initial academic actions are structured to run out of a temporary transit facility at Bongora, the permanent state-of-the-art campus will be developed on an expansive plot at Marabhita near Palasbari in the Kamrup district. To guarantee elite global academic benchmarks right from inception, the premier business school will be directly mentored by IIM Ahmedabad, with a curriculum tailored to leverage regional growth sectors such as sustainable agribusiness and eco-tourism. Beyond the framework of the new management school, the two leaders utilized the meeting to review state-wide educational metrics, mapping out the systematic deployment of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, assessing Samagra Shiksha infrastructure updates, and coordinating joint interventions to elevate student learning outcomes across rural and urban schools alike.
