India’s first hydrogen train 🚆
India’s first hydrogen train has received approval from the Railway Board, marking a major step for Indian Railways and green transportation in India. The 10-coach hydrogen-powered DEMU train is planned for the Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana and will run at a maximum approved speed of 75 kmph.

Unlike diesel trains, this hydrogen train will use hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity. In simple terms, hydrogen and oxygen combine inside the fuel cell to produce power for the train’s motors, while the main emission is only water vapour. This makes hydrogen train technology important for cleaner rail transport and India’s long-term net-zero goals.
