Gogaji is a popular folk deity and Rajput prince who is venerated by Hindus as Guggaji, and by Muslims as Gugga pir or Gugga zahir pir. According to legend, Gogaji was the son of Queen Bacchal and King Jewar of the Chauhan clan of Rajputs:
Birth: When King Janmejay died, his soul was trapped in the underworld by the nagas.
Guru Gorakhnath: In the Kali Yuga, Bacchal served Guru Gorakhnath, who was pleased and offered her a son who would be a great hero. Guru Gorakhnath then went to the underworld to rescue the king's soul, carrying a g┼лgal (jug) to hide it in. The nagas followed him, and when Gogaji reached Earth, the Taksak naga stole the g┼лgal from his hands. A young man nearby saw the incident and used a broom handle to strike the naga, causing the g┼лgal to fall out. Guru Gorakhnath then retrieved the g┼лgal and gave the young man a boon, saying that any child born from the g┼лgal would become a great hero whose songs would be sung by people.
Muslim oral tradition: According to Muslim oral tradition in Punjab, Gogaji was also a disciple of Muslim Pir Hazi Rattan of Bathinda, who taught him how to enter and exit solid earth. Gogaji is also said to have lived in Bathinda for a time.
Gogaji's cult is prevalent in Rajasthan and other northern Indian states, including Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and the northwestern districts of Uttar Pradesh. His followers can also be found in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
