DISAM HUL JOHAR-2025
Santhal Revolution of 1855–56: A Legacy of Resistance and Justice
On 30th June 1855, the Santhal Revolution (Hul) began in Bhognadi, Santhal Parganas, under the powerful leadership of Sidhu Murmu, Kanhu Murmu, Chand Bhato Murmu, Phulo Murmu, and Jhano Murmu. This uprising was a historic resistance against the oppression by British colonial rulers, corrupt moneylenders (mahajans), and exploitative landlords (zamindars).
The Santhal Hul was a mass movement that saw the Santhal Adivasis rise to protect their land, culture, and dignity. Over 60,000 Santhals took part in this armed struggle for justice and survival. Their sacrifices eventually led to legal reforms like the creation of the Santhal Parganas Tenancy Act (SPTA) and recognition of the region under the Fifth Schedule of the Indian Constitution—safeguarding tribal rights and land from external exploitation.

Today’s Struggle: The Santhals of Assam
In today's time, especially in Assam, many Santhal communities continue to live without Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, despite their clear tribal identity, heritage, and socio-economic challenges. This denies them rightful access to reservations in education, jobs, and legal protections.
It is time for the Santhal youth of Assam to wake up and rise in unity and constitutional awareness to:
Demand official recognition as a Scheduled Tribe (ST) in Assam
Ensure land rights and protection from displacement
Secure educational opportunities and scholarships
Promote and preserve Santhal language, culture, and identity
Hold the Assam government accountable for fair inclusion and representation
The Santhals of Assam are eligible and deserving of ST status, as they share the same cultural and historical lineage as those recognized in Jharkhand and other states.
---
Conclusion:
Let the spirit of the 1855 Hul inspire a new movement—not of arms, but of unity, awareness, and constitutional empowerment. Santhal unity and heritage must be honored by securing our rights in Assam and across the country.
"Hul Johar!"
Justice for Santhals, Past and Present.
