छोटी दिवाली, जिसे नरक चतुर्दशी भी कहा जाता है, से कई पौराणिक कथाएं जुड़ी हुई हैं, जो बुराई पर अच्छाई की जीत का प्रतीक हैं:

1. भगवान कृष्ण और नरकासुर: इस दिन भगवान कृष्ण ने दानव नरकासुर का वध किया था, जो बुराई के अंत और सकारात्मकता व प्रकाश के उदय का प्रतीक है।

2. माँ काली की विजय: पूर्वी भारत में छोटी दिवाली मां काली के विजय दिवस के रूप में मनाई जाती है, जिन्होंने राक्षसों का नाश कर दुनिया को अंधकार से मुक्त किया था। इस दिन उनकी आराधना कर लोग असुर और नकारात्मकता के नाश की कामना करते हैं।

3. यमदीपदान (राजा हिम का पुत्र): एक कथा के अनुसार, राजा हिम के पुत्र की शादी की रात सांप के काटने से मृत्यु होने की भविष्यवाणी थी। उसकी पत्नी ने रातभर दीप जलाकर और गीत गाकर पहरा दिया। जब यमराज (मृत्यु के देवता) आए तो दीपों की रोशनी से अंधे हो गए और बिना उसका जीवन लिए चले गए। इसलिए छोटी दिवाली पर दीप जलाए जाते हैं ताकि नकारात्मकता और अकाल मृत्यु से बचाव हो सके।

4. वामन और राजा बलि: एक अन्य कथा में भगवान विष्णु ने वामन अवतार लेकर अहंकारी राजा बलि को विनम्रता का पाठ सिखाया और उसके घमंड को नियंत्रित किया। इस कथा को कुछ क्षेत्रों में मनाया जाता है, जो विनम्रता की अहंकार पर विजय का प्रतीक है।

इन सभी कहानियों के माध्यम से छोटी दिवाली, अंधकार पर प्रकाश, घमंड पर विनम्रता और मृत्यु पर जीवन की जीत का संदेश देती है और दिवाली के महापर्व की तैयारी का प्रारंभ करती है।
