The historic Ambubachi Mela - one of India's largest spiritual congregations begins today at Kamakhya Devalaya in Guwahati.

And it is also a one of the biggest religious gatherings of devotees at the Kamakhya Temple in Assam during June. The ‘Maa Kamakhya Temple’, situated in Guwahati, is considered one of the ‘Shakti Peethas‘.

The Ambubachi Mela is celebrated during monsoon in the belief of Goddess Kamakhya going through her annual menstruation cycle at this time. The temple remains closed for three days starting from the seventh day of the “Ashadh” month of the Hindu calendar until the tenth day as part of traditional seclusion during menstruation.

The doors ceremonially open on the twelfth day, and a huge fair takes place at the temple premise. The popular belief is that the fertility brought in by the Goddess will bless the devotees and nurture them

May Maa Kamakhya's blessings be on you all.

Guwahati: The panchayat elections in Assam, slated for November, will be conducted using traditional ballot papers, although Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) may be introduced on an experimental basis in designated districts, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday.
He added that the election will be predominantly “non-political” in nature. The ward members, from whom the panchayat presidents will be elected, are now obligated to contest without symbols of any political party. This initiative was undertaken to assess the credibility of the candidates among the general populace and electorate.
Approximately 70% of the candidates compete for these two positions of ward members, some aspiring for the posts of presidents. Nevertheless, Anchalik Panchayat and Zila Parishad members will be allocated symbols for their respective campaigns.
“Panchayat election will be conducted using ballots because there are intricacies in conducting the polls for three levels (ward, Anchalik and district level) using EVMs. But to the best of my knowledge, EVMs will be introduced in four to five districts of the state on a pilot basis,” Sarma told the media.
“In the three-tier system, election to ward members will not be on symbols. This lowest tier will see an open contest. But election for Anchalik Panchayat and Zila Parishad members will be on a symbol. This panchayat election will be largely free from political activism as most of the candidates will compete to secure the posts of ward members and panchayat presidents,” he added.
Rural elections will be conducted in November. A delimitation exercise will be carried out before that for all development blocks. Sources said once the delimitation is over and the reservation of constituencies is notified, the Assam State Election Commission will decide on the poll schedule.
