Authorities in Noida have imposed strict security measures on International Labour Day after recent worker protests turned violent, with Section 163 enforced from April 30 to May 8 across Gautam Buddh Nagar to prevent unlawful gatherings and maintain order.

The restrictions, under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, prohibit assembly of more than five people and come amid heightened tensions in industrial areas. Officials said the measures were introduced to curb any fresh unrest and ensure public safety following the clashes.

Security has been intensified through a ‘Zonal-Sector Scheme’, dividing the commissionerate into 11 zones and 49 sectors for closer monitoring. Noida has four zones and 16 sectors, Central Noida three zones and 24 sectors, and Greater Noida four zones and nine sectors.

Heavy police deployment and surveillance have been ramped up at key junctions and industrial hubs.

The price of commercial LPG was hiked by a record Rs 993 per 19-kg cylinder on Friday, marking the steepest single increase to date and the third consecutive monthly rise, driven by surging global energy prices amid the ongoing West Asia conflict.

With the latest revision, a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder commonly used by hotels and restaurantswill now cost Rs 3,071.50 in Delhi, up from Rs 2,078.50. The sharp increase is expected to add pressure to the hospitality sector, which may pass on the burden to consumers.

This follows earlier hikes of Rs 195.50 per cylinder on April 1 and Rs 114.50 on March 1, indicating a sustained upward trend in fuel costs.

Industry observers attribute the rise to volatility in international fuel markets, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, which have disrupted supply chains and pushed prices higher globally.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar died after the private aircraft he was travelling in crash-landed near Baramati early Wednesday, officials confirmed. The Learjet 45, operated by VSR Aviation, was attempting to land when it crashed, killing all five people on board, including Pawar, his security personnel and the two crew members.

The tragic incident occurred during Pawar’s flight from Mumbai to Baramati, where he was headed for local campaign work. Initial information indicates poor visibility and loss of runway sighting at the time of landing, and DGCA has launched a full investigation into the crash.

Political leaders across India, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, have expressed grief over the loss. Pawar’s funeral and last rites are being held in Baramati with full state honours, marking a somber moment in Maharashtra’s political landscape.

In a move seen as reciprocal, India has imposed a 30 per cent import duty on yellow peas imported from the United States, triggering concern among US lawmakers. The decision follows the US imposing a 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods and threatening to raise it sharply over India’s purchase of Russian oil. Senators from pulse-producing states such as North Dakota and Montana have flagged the duty as a setback for American farmers and urged negotiations for its removal.

The import duty was imposed on October 29, 2025, and came into effect from November 1, ending the duty-free import policy that had been in place since December 2023. According to the US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service, the duty comprises a 10 per cent basic customs duty and a 20 per cent Agriculture Infrastructure Development Cess, applicable to shipments dated on or after November 1.

India said the measure aims to protect domestic farmers from cheaper imports, stabilise local pulse prices, and encourage higher pulse cultivation. While the move adds complexity to India–US trade talks, officials clarified that an import duty is not the same as a tariff, though the terms are often loosely used interchangeably.
