Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has urged the Assam government to officially observe September 19 as ‘Zubeen Divas’ and November 5 as ‘Bhupen Divas’.

Speaking at Zubeen Khetra, Gogoi said the proposed observances would honour the lasting contributions of Zubeen Garg and Dr Bhupen Hazarika to Assamese music, culture and society.

Gogoi also criticised the Central government over its response to Assam’s recent floods and appealed for the two special days to be formally recognised through government programmes and official events.

Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu inaugurated a new Rs 3.92-crore academic building at Dhemaji City College on August 29 under the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA).

The new facility has been developed to support the college’s growing student population, which has reached around 1,700 students. It includes additional classrooms, a computer-based testing centre with 100 computers, and a meeting hall with capacity for around 500 students.

The project is expected to improve academic facilities and provide students with a better learning environment as the college expands its higher education infrastructure.

Assam security forces have stopped three Bangladeshi nationals from allegedly entering India illegally as the state intensifies surveillance along its borders, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

The operation was carried out during the night after security personnel detected the suspected entrants. Sarma said multiple layers of surveillance are being used to strengthen border security and prevent illegal crossings.

In separate operations, authorities also seized 54 cattle in Goalpara and Dhubri. Goalpara Police recovered 12 cattle near the inter-state border and made arrests in connection with the suspected smuggling attempt.

Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia has criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his comments on the ongoing “purification” controversy in Uttarakhand.

The Assam Cabinet has approved a Rs 50,000-crore package to accelerate major development projects across the state. The funds will be mobilised through Assam’s own resources, NABARD support and various Central government schemes.

The package will focus on healthcare, education, housing, roads, power and flood management. Key projects include infrastructure upgrades for schools and Anganwadi centres, housing for tea garden workers, women’s markets and hostels, and strengthening of anti-flood embankments.

The government has also approved Rs 600 crore for a Proton Beam Therapy facility at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, aimed at expanding access to advanced cancer treatment.

The Assam Cabinet has approved the construction of a 1.1-km railway overbridge near Howrah Railway Station in Lanka, at an estimated cost of more than Rs 155 crore.

The project will also include a bypass road connecting Kheroni Chariali in West Karbi Anglong with NH-27. The new infrastructure is expected to reduce traffic congestion in Lanka town and improve movement between important parts of the region.

The Cabinet also approved the continued distribution of subsidised masur dal and sugar through PDS shops at a combined price of Rs 105 per kg, benefiting more than 70 lakh families across Assam.

The first group of Assamese tourists who were stranded in Nepal amid severe floods has safely returned to India, bringing relief to their families.

The group travelled from Bhadrapur Airport after flood-related disruptions affected their journey. After crossing the India-Nepal border, the Assam government helped arrange their onward travel and ensured they reached their respective homes safely.

Authorities are continuing efforts to assist other Assamese travellers who remain stranded in flood-affected parts of Nepal.

The Assam government has announced an investment of more than Rs 109 crore to upgrade infrastructure at Gauhati University, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

The plan includes new multidisciplinary academic buildings, hostels and staff quarters, along with renovation and upgrades to existing facilities. Libraries, auditoriums, furniture and other modern amenities will also be developed.

The project will cover more than 21,300 square metres of built-up area and is aimed at improving facilities for students and faculty while strengthening the university’s academic and residential infrastructure.

Assam Police have seized around 80,000 Yaba tablets worth nearly Rs 16 crore during an operation at Moynagarh in Cachar district.

Acting on specific intelligence, police intercepted a vehicle at Dolu, under Borkhola police station. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of the tablets, which were hidden inside a secret compartment.

Police arrested 25-year-old Somsul Hussain Laskar in connection with the seizure. The vehicle was reportedly coming from a neighbouring state. Authorities have launched a further investigation to identify the wider network involved in the trafficking.

Assam’s Samrang Land Customs Station (LCS) in Udalguri district has become operational, opening a new gateway for trade between India and Bhutan.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the facility will strengthen cross-border trade infrastructure, make the movement of goods easier and improve connectivity between Assam and Bhutan.

Samrang was recently notified as an additional entry and exit point for Bhutan’s bilateral and third-country trade. The authorised route connects Samrang in Assam with Samrang in Bhutan through the Rangia-Tamulpur-Dimakuchi road, which is expected to support greater commercial activity in the region.
