A wolf was found in a leg-hold trap in Yellowstone.
It lunged and snapped at every single person who came close.
One scientist stopped moving and just held eye contact. Steadily. Without looking away.
After several minutes the wolf stopped fighting.
It sat down. Held the eye contact back.
When the trap opened it didn't run immediately. It looked at the scientist one last time.
Then walked into the treeline.

Scientists are very careful about using words like gratitude when describing animal behavior.
There are good reasons for this caution. Anthropomorphism is a real problem in research.
And then a freed elephant reaches its trunk toward the ranger who saved it and holds it there for several seconds.
And the researcher who has spent a career being professionally careful about this exact thing has to write it down accurately.
The data cannot tell us what the elephant was doing.

She was dragging 1,080 pounds of weight. Barely keeping her blowhole above water.
Four divers jumped in with blades. One wrong movement from her tail could have ended any of them.
She held completely still for over an hour while strangers with knives worked across her body.
When the last rope was cut she didn't swim away.
She came back and nudged each diver. One by one.
