Women can offer ‘namaz’ in mosques: AIMPLB to SC

Lucknow: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has informed the Supreme Court in an affidavit that the entry of women into mosques for offering ‘namaz‘ inside is permitted.

However, free intermixing of genders in the same line or common space is not in conformity with the position prescribed in Islam and that needs to be taken care of by segregation within the premises by the management committee, if possible, the board said in a statement.

“Considering the said religious texts, doctrines and religious beliefs of the followers of Islam, it is submitted that entry of women into mosques for offering namaz inside mosques is permitted,” the board added.

Apart from this stated position in the affidavit, the board also appealed to the Muslim community that wherever new mosques are constructed, this issue of making appropriate space for women be kept in mind.

The apex court is seized of a plea relating to the entry of Muslim women into mosques for offering namaz.

One Farha Anwar Hussain Shaikh had filed a petition in the top court in 2020 and has sought a direction that the alleged practices of prohibition of entry of Muslim women into mosques in India are “illegal and unconstitutional”. The plea is likely to be heard by the apex court in March.

The board also said a Muslim woman is free to enter a mosque for prayers and it is her option to exercise her right to avail such facilities as available for prayers in a mosque.

ECI announces election schedule for two MLC seats in Telangana

Hyderabad: The biennial elections to two seats of the Telangana Legislative Council, one teachers’ constituency and one local authorities’ constituency, will be held on March 13. The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday released the schedule for two seats of the Telangana Legislative Council, along with 13 seats of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council.

The term of Mahabubnagar-Ranga Reddy-Hyderabad Teachers’ constituency MLC Katepally Janardhan Reddy and Hyderabad Local Authorities’ constituency MLC MS Prabhakar Rao, will end on March 29 and May 1 respectively.

The ECI announced that notifications for these elections will be issued on February 16. The last date for filing of nominations will be February 23. The nominations will be taken up for scrutiny the next day. The last date for withdrawal of nominations will be February 27. Polling will be held on March 13. The counting of votes will be taken up on March 16.

The ECI announced that the model code of conduct for these elections would come into force with immediate effect in the constituencies concerned. Accordingly, the Chief Secretary and the Chief Electoral Officer of Telangana were directed to ensure that the extant instructions regarding Covid-19 containment measures, were complied with while making arrangements for conducting the elections.

YS Sharmila presents shoe box to chief minister KCR, dares him to join her padayatra in Telangana

YS Sharmila, the chief of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Telangana Party (YSTRP), while addressing the media on Thursday, presented a shoe box and said she was gifting a pair of shoes to Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao. She further challenged him to join her padyatra in the state. The padayatra will resume on Thursday from the same place it was stopped earlier.

Fire breaks out at newly constructed Telangana Secretariat building

Hyderabad: A fire broke out at the newly constructed Dr. B.R.Ambedkar Telangana Secretariat Complex building on Friday early hours.

Sources said the fire erupted from the top floors where the wood work for interiors was on around 3 am. The workers noticed smoke and immediately alerted their in-charge.

On receiving information, about 12 fire engines rushed to the spot and the fire department and police personnel took part in the fire fighting.

Fire officials said the fire was completely brought under control.

They were ascertaining the actual reasons for the fire accident.

Fire Department DG Y. Nagi Reddy and other senior officials visited the spot and monitored the operation.
