Under the quiet night sky, Nepalganj Road whispered the final songs of its metre-gauge days. The old maroon coaches rested beside weathered platforms, carrying memories of countless journeys, farewells, and reunions. Dim lamps touched the rails like fading memories, while the locomotive stood silently, guarding an era that would soon disappear. Closed for gauge conversion by 2024, the station became a memory etched in steel and stone—a place where time once moved slowly, and every departing train left behind a little piece of the heart. the rails still whisper of another time.
Semaphore arms rise against the fading sky,
silent guardians of journeys long gone by.

In Lakhimpur’s villages, beneath the blue night,
old tracks dissolve into pools of distant light.
A fragile paper ticket, worn and small,
holds a journey that refuses to let memory fall.

Maroon coaches carry stories into the haze,
while trees and platforms watch in quiet daze.
Soon, perhaps, these rails will sleep beneath the earth,yet in every photograph, they’ll rise again,
remembering the journeys that once gave them worth.

The 52262 Mailani–Nanpara Passenger, with its old maroon metre-gauge coaches, standing at Manjhra Purab, carries the warmth of countless journeys, forgotten conversations, and ordinary lives. The manual levers seen here, still operated by hand to change the tracks,make this scene even more special. But with Indian Railways proposing gauge conversion of this section, these coaches, levers, stations and the entire metre-gauge atmosphere may soon disappear. One day, these photographs may be all that remains of a world that quietly carried generations.

The Nanpara–Mailani metre-gauge passenger quietly rolled through the forests of Dudhwa, pulled by the unmistakable blue-and-yellow YDM-4. Somewhere between the clatter of trains and the aroma of chai, there lived a simpler India ,unhurried, ordinary, and beautiful enough to be remembered.
