Over two years after the ethnic violence broke out in Manipur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit the state on September 13 and unveil projects valued at Rs 8,500 crore, officials said on Thursday.

Opposition parties have been criticising the Prime Minister for not visiting the northeastern state, where clashes between Kuki and Meitei communities have left over 260 people dead and thousands homeless since May 2023.

According to officials, Modi will lay foundation stones for various development projects worth Rs 7,300 crore from Peace Ground in Churachandpur, where Kukis are in the majority.

Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Tuesday met with at least five Kuki-Zo MLAs in Churachandpur, officials said.

The meeting comes ahead of the likely visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the second week of this month.

Bhalla met with MLAs Ngursanglur Sanate, Vungzagin Valte, L Haokip, LM Khaute and Paolienlal Haokip, along with BJP's Churachandpur district president Thanglam Haokip, at the deputy commissioner's office, an official told PTI.

Three BJP leaders in Manipur, including two former legislators, joined the Congress at a function in Delhi, according to a statement issued by the grand old party here on Tuesday.

Former BJP MLAs Y Surchandra Singh, L Radhakishore Singh and party leader Uttamkumar Ningthoujam crossed over to the Congress during the event at the AICC headquarters in the national capital on Monday, it said.

They were welcomed at the party in the presence of AICC in-charge of Manipur, Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, and state Congress president K Meghachandra Singh.

Manipur BJP MLA Yumnam Khemchand on Thursday termed the decision by the Kuki Zo Council (KZC) to reopen National Highway-2 (Imphal-Dimapur Road) as a "substantial milestone and a notable development" in restoration of normalcy in the northeastern state.

In an official statement, the Singjamei constituency legislator said the breakthrough came following deliberations held by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) with various stakeholders and civil society organisations.

"A major breakthrough was achieved today with the decision to reopen the Imphal-Dimapur Road, National Highway-2. This development constitutes a substantial milestone in the restoration of normalcy and is a notable development for all of us," he said.

(Sep 4) Amid speculations that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may visit Manipur later this month, 'no drone zone' was declared in Churachandpur district on Thursday.

According to an order issued by District Magistrate Dharun Kumar S, the decision has been taken to strengthen security "during the visit of the VVIP".

"...with a view to ensure and strengthen security during the visit of the VVIP, declare the whole of Churachandpur District as 'NO DRONE ZONE' and do hereby prohibit the flying of any kind of aviation devices including UAV, Drones, balloons etc., except only those approved by Government, in Churachandpur District with immediate effect, until further orders," it said.

The Supreme Court on Monday questioned why a fresh forensic report on the authenticity of audio clips allegedly linking former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh to the ethnic violence in the state had not been submitted even though it had been sought three months ago, Live Law reported. In February, the court had directed the Central Forensic Science Laboratory to examine the clips and submit its findings in a sealed cover. After reviewing the report, a bench of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar in May said that it was not satisfied with the analysis given by the laboratory and asked for a fresh report.
