In a strong show of unity and solidarity, a candlelight march was taken out on Monday evening at Shopian to condemn the recent brutal killings in Ganderbal and Shopian, where innocent civilians lost their lives.

The march, led by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shopian, Mohammad Shahid Saleem Dar, saw participation from district officers, officials of various departments, students, civil society members, activists, and the general public.

The march commenced from the Mini Secretariat with participants holding candles and raising slogans against the senseless violence.

Newly elected members of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly took their oaths, officiated by pro-tem speaker Mubarak Gul.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah led the ceremony by pledging in Kashmiri, while Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary took his oath in English.

This event marks the conclusion of a six-year gap in legislative activity.

Among the 51 first-time MLAs is 29-year-old BJP member Shagun Parihar, the youngest in the assembly, while NC veteran Abdul Rahim Rather, at 80, is the oldest.

A National Investigation Agency (NIA) team led by a senior officer is headed to the terror attack site in Gagangir in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district where a doctor and six construction workers were killed when terrorists opened fire at a construction site on Sunday.

Sources said a Superintendent of Police rank officer will be leading the NIA team from the agency’s regional branch in the Union Territory and it is expected to arrive at the terror spot by noon.

Srinagar, Oct 20: A doctor was among seven persons killed, and five others were injured, when terrorists opened fire near a tunnel construction site along the Srinagar-Leh national highway in Gagangeer, Ganderbal district, on Sunday evening, officials said.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, Vidhi Kumar Birdi, confirmed that two terrorists attacked the site near the Z-Morh tunnel, killing seven workers, including Dr. Shahnawaz from Budgam, and injuring five others. “The area is cordoned off, and security forces have launched a search operation,”

At least seven people including a doctor from Budgam and five non locals were killed while several other people were injured in a major militant attack in Ganderbal district on Sunday evening.

Official sources told GNS that militants opened fire on a camp, mainly housing labourers and other staff of a private company working at Gagangir area. They were engaged on the construction of a tunnel in the Gund area of the district, they said.

Two labourers died on the spot while five others persons including the doctor succumbed to injuries later. Several others sustained injuries, the officials said, adding that further details are awaited

Srinagar, Oct 18: A bullet-riddled body of a labourer from Bihar was recovered on Friday in the Wachi Zainapora area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district. The victim, identified as Ashok Chauhan from Banka district in Bihar, had been residing in Sangam, Anantnag, and was found with multiple bullet wounds.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Zone, VK Birdi, confirmed the recovery of the body and stated that a case has been registered, with investigations underway.

Srinagar, Oct 18: Member of Parliament (MP) for Baramulla, Er Rashid on Friday severely criticised the Jammu and Kashmir’s newly elected Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, accusing him of aligning with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to secure political gain.

Srinagar, October 19: The Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha has condemned the brutal killing of Ashok Chauhan by terrorists in Shopian on Friday.

In a post on X, LG Sinha wrote, “I strongly condemn the brutal killing of a vendor Ashok Chauhan in Shopian by cowardly terrorists. The entire nation stands shoulder to shoulder with his family. Our security forces are determined to hunt down the culprits and bring them to justice. My thoughts are with his family members and friends in this time of grief. I have directed the Jammu Kashmir Police and District Administration to extend all the support.”
