Ep- 2 Generations on a Plate
In this episode of Generation Unplayed, I share a unique UP recipe called Khopda Arhar Dal, the process of making roti pieces like Indian pasta, tempering with onions and ghee, and this nutritious dish is like poor people’s food when you lack vegetables or meat.🤌

Mumbai feels a little different this time. Maybe because I’m different this time.šŸ’œ

I once said I’d cover Mumbai last… because somewhere I knew that once I truly stepped into this city, I’d fall for it.

I’ve been here before for work — shoots, meetings, deadlines, always somewhere to be. But the last time I came solo, I fell in love with Mumbai. And this time, coming back solo again, it somehow feels… familiar. Almost like the city knows me now.

This trip has been another little chapter of **Unlearning to Learn.

Unlearning the need to always be productive.
Unlearning the rush.
Unlearning multitasking.
Unlearning the need to tick places off a list just because everyone else has been there.

Instead… I’m learning to go slow.

Eating alone without feeling alone.
Travelling alone. Wandering without constantly following Maps.
Making random friends along the way.
Finding tiny, hidden places instead of just the viral ones.
Understanding the ingredients on my plate before simply eating them.
Sitting somewhere a little longer because I feel like it.
Taking **one step at a time**, without wondering what next should be. Maybe finding yourself isn’t always about going somewhere completely unknown.

Sometimes it’s about returning to a place you’ve been before… as a version of yourself you haven’t met yet.

Mumbai, you’re slowly becoming familiar. 🤌

And somewhere between the crowded streets, solo meals, long walks and unexpected conversations, I’m learning something I probably should’ve learnt long ago—

ā€œSolitude isn’t lonelinessā€ Sometimes, it’s where self-love begins.** šŸ’œ

Unlearning to Learn — one city, one experience, one version of me at a time.šŸ™Œ

Some foods are eaten. Some foods carry **stories, seasons, memories & identity šŸ’›

But what makes this fish so special? Why is good Ilish so expensive? Why do we wait for its season, debate where it came from, and have very specific opinions about how it should be cooked? 😭

For this story, I wanted to go beyond just another Ilish recipe.

I went to the **local bazaar**, understood the fish a little better, explored the **local produce & ingredients** that belong with it, and cooked it **head to tail** — because traditionally, almost nothing goes to waste.

From **Matha diye Dal** to **Begun Jhol, Shorshe-Posto Ilish, Dim Bhaja and Lejar Bhorta** — every part became a different dish, with its own technique and story.

And somewhere between buying, cleaning, cooking and finally sitting down to eat, I understood why Ilish is not merely an expensive fish.

It is about **seasonality, sustainability, local produce, cooking wisdom and generations of food memories.**

This is exactly the kind of food story I want to document more — not just *what we eat*, but **why we eat it.** šŸ’›

**Ilish — from Bazaar to Plate, Head to Tail.**

Full food documentary is now on YouTube šŸŽ„
*Save this post if you love learning the story behind your food.*āœŒļø
