Milan Bahadur Chettri Becomes First Indian Nepali-speaking Journalist to Cover BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok
Bangkok, Thailand | April 14, 2025 — Milan Bahadur Chettri, a trailblazing Indian journalist, has made history as the first Indian Nepali-speaking media professional officially accredited to cover the prestigious BIMSTEC Summit. He successfully completed his coverage of the high-level diplomatic event held in Bangkok, Thailand, from April 2 to April 4, 2025.
Chettri’s presence at the summit marks a significant milestone for both Indian and Nepali-speaking journalism. This assignment followed an earlier reporting trip to Malaysia.
The BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) Summit garnered global attention this year, particularly due to the recent catastrophic earthquake in Myanmar. India’s robust humanitarian response under the "Burma Mission" received widespread recognition during the summit. Chettri’s coverage focused on showcasing these efforts and analyzing India’s growing leadership in regional disaster relief and cooperation.
On April 3, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the summit, reinforcing India’s strategic vision and commitment to regional solidarity and resilience.
During his stay in Bangkok, Chettri also secured exclusive interviews with prominent figures, including the Presidents of the Chambers of Commerce of Thailand and Nepal.
Chettri is no stranger to international diplomacy and high-level journalism. He has previously covered the 2024 BRICS Summit in Russia, the G20 Summits held in India (2023) and Brazil (2024), the 2024 COP30 Summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, and last year’s Bangladesh Elections as a Foreign Observer.
His growing portfolio includes accreditations for several upcoming major global events, including the BRICS Summit and COP30 in Brazil, the G20 Summit in South Africa, and the G7 Summit in Canada.
In conclusion, Milan Bahadur Chettri stands out as the only Indian journalist to have covered nine major international summits held both in India and abroad.
