Guwahati, June 6, 2024– Late last night at 10:30 PM, authorities received information about inflammatory graffiti near Srinagar Point on G S Road. The writings, inscribed in Assamese, included controversial political statements such as, “পূৰ্বৰ খালিস্থান মুক্ত অঞ্চল ঘোষণা কৰক ভাৰতক UNESCO ক অনুৰোধ,” “মোদী অৱসৰ প্ৰিয়ংকা প্ৰধানমন্ত্ৰী,” and “মহাত্মাৰ হত্যাকাৰী নাথুৰাম দল বি জে পি দেশৰ পৰা বিদায় দি কংগ্ৰেছ C P I M.”

An immediate investigation led to the identification of a suspect, Dharmeswar Deka, known locally for his mental health issues. A witness reported seeing Deka in the act of writing the graffiti. Subsequent police visits to Deka’s residence confirmed his involvement; officers found similar writings on his house walls and seized a bottle of blue paint, kerosene, and blue paint-stained slippers.

Local residents corroborated the witness's account, stating that Deka, suffering from long-term mental illness, frequently scribbles on walls in the neighborhood. His wife, a contractual cook at Bank of India, has been the primary breadwinner and caretaker. She confirmed that Deka has been uncooperative with his treatment at GMCH for the past six months.

No evidence suggests the involvement of any organized groups. The police have asked Deka's family to present him along with his medical records for further evaluation. The investigation remains ongoing.
