Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu is a celebration of bountiful nature and abundance. It is also an occasion for the people of Assam to enjoy (bhog kora) and share in the gifts of nature as a community, and to strengthen a sense of identity and belonging. The spirit of indulgence and sharing is manifested in the numerous delicacies, snacks and savouries that are prepared and relished during the festival.

Magh Bihu, also known as Bhogali Bihu, is a traditional festival celebrated in the Indian state of Assam. It is a harvest festival and is typically celebrated during the winter season after the harvesting is over. The festival is marked by the burning of a large bonfire, called the “Meji”.

Magh Bihu is celebrated on the cusp of Magh, i.e., the last day of the month of Pooh or Pausa (as per the lunar calendar). It is also called Domahi or the confluence (samahar) of two months. This day is considered auspicious in the Hindu lunar year and is known as the Makar Sankranti, i.e., the day when the sun begins its northward journey or Uttarayan and transitions into the Hindu zodiac sign of Makara. On this day the Sun God is worshipped in various parts of India in the form of different festivals such as Pongal (Tamil Nadu), Maghi (Punjab) and Uttarayan (Gujarat).

Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu is a celebration of bountiful nature and abundance. It is also an occasion for the people of Assam to enjoy and share the gifts of nature as a community, and to strengthen a sense of identity and belonging. | Before he was the one blowing the whistle, Horen Engti was the one guarding the net. Now, the seasoned 90s goalkeeper and current KASA Football Secretary is back in the "classroom" at the KASA stadium, grinding through the final days of a rigorous AFC ‘B’ Diploma coaching course.

From his days as a star player for White Dove Society to coaching Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC to two ASPL championships, Engti’s journey has always been about elevating the game in Karbi Anglong. He is now one of 23 candidates from across the Northeast—and one of only six from Assam—fighting to move from a 'C' license to the prestigious 'B' license.

The atmosphere at the KASA stadium is currently one of high-stakes learning. Module 2 of the course, which began on January 7, is the final hurdle for these coaches.

The 20-day course (split into two modules) concludes on January 17.
Engti admits the schedule is "hectic," balancing complex theory with on-field practical exams. Candidates must master advanced tactics, player psychology, and modern trends like counter-pressing and set-piece analysis to pass.

"There are vast areas of subjects included and we have to cover up within a short span," Engti shared, noting the struggle to secure the high scores required for the license.

Leading the charge is Salim Pathan, an AFC ‘A’ license holder with over a decade of experience in the top tiers of Indian football. As the AIFF-appointed Educator, Pathan is moulding the candidates in developing unique playing styles; advanced game analysis, and team preparation for high-performance environments.

For Engti, this isn't just about a certificate; it’s about a career dedicated to the region. His coaching resume already includes guiding the Assam Senior Women’s Team to the National Games finals in Shillong; coaching the Assam team in the Northeast Games (2024–2025), and nurturing the next generation through the KASA Football Coaching Centre (KASAFCC).

The course is organised by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and hosted by the Assam Football Association (AFA) in collaboration with KASA. As the final whistle approaches on January 17, the district watches to see if one of its most dedicated football figures will bring home the 'B' license.

The Diphu Treasury is again in the bribe frame. A video footage of inside the office shows two staff taking bribes as alleged by the KSA.

DIPHU, KARBI ANGLONG
SATURDAY, JAN 10, 2026

The Karbi Students’ Association (KSA), Semson Teron faction, has formally submitted a memorandum to the District Commissioner (DC) of Karbi Anglong, alleging systemic corruption and bribery within the Diphu Treasury Office.
The memorandum, submitted by KSA General Secretary Ajay Rongchehon on Thursday, claims that contractors are routinely coerced into paying bribes to process bills and that official files are frequently stalled without "illegal gratification."

The KSA claims to possess video evidence showing a Treasury staff member accepting cash from a contractor. The student organisation argues these practices are stalling vital developmental works across the district.

When approached by local media, Treasury Officer Chinmoy Hazarika acknowledged the complaints. "As a formal complaint has been lodged with the DC, it is inappropriate for me to comment at this time. We will wait for the DC to constitute an inquiry and find evidence," Hazarika stated. The KSA has demanded the immediate transfer of the Treasury Officer to ensure an impartial investigation.
