The region constitutes a part of the larger Kashmir region, which has been the subject of dispute between India, Pakistan, and China since 1947.[8][9] It is bordered by the Tibet Autonomous Region to the east, the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh to the south, both the Indian-administered union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan to the west, and the south

west corner of Xinjiang across the Karakoram Pass in the far north. It extends from the Siachen Glacier in the Karakoram range to the north to the main Great Himalayas to the south.[10][11] The eastern end, consisting of the uninhabited Aksai Chin plains, is claimed by the Indian Government as part of Ladakh, and has been under Chinese control since 1962.[12][13] Until 2019, Ladakh was a region of the Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir. In August 2019, the Parliament of India passed an act by which Ladakh became a union territory on 31 October 2019.[14]

In the past Ladakh gained importance from its strategic location at the crossroads of important trade routes,[15] but as the Chinese authorities closed the borders between Tibet Autonomous Region and Ladakh in the 1960s, international trade dwindled. As Ladakh is a part of the strategically important Kashmir region, the Indian military maintains a strong presence in the region. The largest town in Ladakh is Leh, followed by Kargil, each of which headquarters a district.[16] The Leh district contains the Indus, Shyok and Nubra river valleys. The Kargil district contains the Suru, Drass and Zanskar river valleys. The main populated regions are the river valleys, but the mountain slopes also support the pastoral Changpa nomads. The main religious groups in the region are Muslims (mainly Shia), Tibetan Buddhists Ladakh is one of the most sparsely populated regions in India. As its culture and history are closely related to that of Tibet, it is known as the "Little Tibet".[19]

Ladakh is the largest and the second least populous union territory of India.[citation needed]

Ladakh to get its first medical college. The Union Government has approved the establishment of three new medical colleges under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) to enhance medical education in underserved regions. Jammu and Kashmir will see new colleges in Udhampur and Handwara (Kupwara district), while Ladakh will receive its first-ever medical college in Leh.

This initiative is part of a broader plan to strengthen healthcare education by establishing 157 new medical colleges across India, focusing on aspirational districts and border regions. The aim is to improve access to medical education and address the shortage of healthcare professionals in remote areas.

In addition to the newly approved colleges, Jammu and Kashmir already has five medical colleges in Anantnag, Baramulla, Rajouri, Doda, and Kathua, established under earlier phases of the scheme. The government has also approved 196 postgraduate seats and 60 MBBS seats for various medical institutions in the region to enhance medical education opportunities.

Furthermore, the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) projects in Awantipora, Kashmir, and Vijaypur, Jammu, are progressing steadily, with the government allocating ₹2,326.23 crore for their construction. These facilities are expected to become the primary tertiary healthcare centers for the region, reducing the need for patients to travel outside Jammu and Kashmir for specialized medical treatment.
