No official notification yet on Panchayat elections: RDD

_'Fake order being circulated on social media'_

SRINAGAR, August 5: The Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Jammu and Kashmir, has issued a strong clarification regarding a fake government order being widely circulated on various social media platforms, which falsely claims that Panchayat elections in the Union Territory will be conducted after November 2025.

A purported government notification titled "Conduct of Panchayat Elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir – Post November 2025" bearing Order No: 45-RD&PR of 2025 and dated 05-08-2025 is being shared online.

Officials from the department of RDD&PR have confirmed that no such order has been issued by the department the document in circulation is fabricated and misleading.

Officials stated that the State Election Commission is the only competent authority to notify the schedule for Panchayat elections, and no such timeline has been officially announced as of now.

"The general public is advised not to fall prey to such misinformation. Circulating fake government orders is a punishable offence under the Information Technology Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code,” a senior official from the Rural Development Department said.

The department has urged citizens to rely only on official government channels and verified communication for any updates regarding elections or other administrative matters. Strict action is being initiated against those responsible for creating and sharing the forged document.

Amit Shah becomes country’s longest-serving Home Minister, surpasses Advani’s record.

Amit Shah has become the longest-serving Union Minister of Home Affairs of India on Tuesday. With 2,258 days in office since assuming the role on May 30, 2019, Shah has now surpassed the previous record held by senior BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani.
Shah’s tenure has also overtaken that of Congress stalwart Govind Ballabh Pant, cementing his position as a key pillar in the current National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.

Coincidentally, Shah achieved this milestone on August 5, the date he announced the abrogation of Article 370 in Parliament in 2019, ending the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.
Before Amit Shah, the leaders who served the longest tenures as Home Minister include Congress leader Govind Ballabh Pant and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Lal Krishna Advani.

Previously, BJP stalwart Lal Krishna Advani had held the position for 2,256 days (from March 19, 1998, to May 22, 2004). In comparison, Amit Shah has been serving as Home Minister since May 30, 2019, and by August 4, 2025, he will have completed 2,258 days in office.
Govind Ballabh Pant served from January 10, 1955, to March 7, 1961, a total of 6 years and 56 days.

Shah became the country’s Home Minister on May 30 2019, and remained in the post till June 9 2024. He again became Home Minister on June 10 2024, and is serving. Apart from the Home Ministry, he is also the country’s first Cooperation Minister.

Apart from this, Amit Shah had also served as Gujarat Home Minister and held the position of BJP National President.
The tenure of Amit Shah as Union Home Minister, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been marked by several transformative developments in India’s internal security landscape.

The historic abrogation of Article 370 and the withdrawal of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status stand out as landmark decisions. The region has since witnessed a dramatic improvement in law and order, with stone pelting incidents virtually eliminated. Across the country, there has been a sharp decline in areas affected by Left-Wing Extremism, Naxalism, and Maoist activities.

The peaceful progress in the construction of the Ram Janmabhoomi temple, the introduction of new criminal justice laws, and the successful enactment and rollout of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) further highlight this period. Multiple peace agreements in the North East have brought resolution to several long-standing insurgencies, making this a period of significant consolidation in the country’s internal security framework. SC To Hear Plea Seeking Restoration of J&K Statehood on Aug 08.

New Delhi, Aug 5 : The Supreme Court will hear on August 8 an application seeking directions to the Union Government for restoring the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir, nearly six years after its reorganization into a Union Territory.

Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan mentioned the matter before Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, requesting that the case remain listed for August 8. The CJI assured that it will not be deleted from the cause list.

The plea has been filed as a Miscellaneous Application in the disposed-off case “In Re: Article 370 of the Constitution,” where the apex court upheld the abrogation of Article 370. The applicants, college teacher Zahoor Ahmed Bhat and activist Khurshaid Ahmad Malik, argued that despite assurances from the Solicitor General about restoring statehood, no concrete steps have been taken in the last eleven months since the judgment.

They contended that non-restoration of statehood violates the basic feature of federalism. Citing peaceful conduct of Assembly elections, they argued there are no security or law-and-order impediments to granting statehood.

In its previous judgment, the Supreme Court directed that “restoration of statehood shall take place at the earliest and as soon as possible,” though no timeline was set.

BIG BREAKING

Jammu to Attain Full Statehood, Kashmir to Remain UT Without Legislature President Briefed by PM Modi and HM Amit Shah.

Date: August 04, 2025, New Delhi

In a historic development on the sixth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, the Union Government has finalized the decision to grant full statehood to the Jammu region, while retaining the Kashmir Valley as a Union Territory without a legislative assembly. Sources confirm that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have briefed the President of India on the move, marking a significant shift in the administrative structure of Jammu & Kashmir.

According to senior government officials, all procedural formalities have been completed, and the official notification is expected to be issued shortly. The decision is said to have been made after an extensive review of the security, political, and developmental situation in the region.

Key Highlights:

Jammu to be a full-fledged state:
With its own elected legislature and government, Jammu will regain legislative powers lost in 2019 when the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir was bifurcated and downgraded into two Union Territories Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

Kashmir to remain UT without legislature:
The Kashmir Valley, due to its continued strategic and security sensitivity, will continue to be administered directly by the Centre, with no provision for an elected legislative body.

President of India briefed:
The final decision was communicated to the President during a high-level meeting led by PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, indicating that a formal presidential proclamation may soon follow.

This development is expected to be a cornerstone of the BJP government’s “New J&K” strategy, focusing on administrative efficiency, regional empowerment, and continued national integration.

Reactions Expected: While leaders in Jammu are likely to welcome the return of statehood, political parties and civil society groups in Kashmir may express concern over being left without representative governance. Opposition leaders have already begun voicing demands for restoring legislative rights to the Valley as well.

Security has been tightened across Jammu & Kashmir in anticipation of public response, with additional deployments reported in sensitive areas.

This decision, once formalized, would mark one of the most consequential reorganizations of territory and governance since the original reconstitution of the state in 2019.

Further details are awaited as the government prepares for an official announcement in Parliament in the coming days.
