Kolkata's air quality today sits at AQI 158 — firmly in the Moderate category and edging dangerously close to Poor.
At this level, people with asthma, respiratory conditions, heart disease, the elderly and young children should avoid prolonged outdoor exposure. Even healthy individuals may feel irritation in the eyes, nose and throat after extended time outside — especially near high-traffic stretches like EM Bypass, VIP Road and Sealdah.
Summer heat building across the city is trapping pollutants close to ground level. Doctors advise limiting outdoor exercise, keeping windows shut during peak traffic hours and wearing masks in congested areas when AQI crosses 150.
Check your area and stay safe today. 😷

The biggest development since the Iran war began on February 28 — Iran has officially told the United Nations that non-hostile vessels can now pass through the Strait of Hormuz safely.
Ships with no ties to the US or Israel — including Indian vessels — can transit after coordinating with Iranian authorities. Trump called it a "very big present." Oil prices fell 6% instantly to $99 per barrel.
Before this war, 120 ships passed daily. On Monday — just five. Massive queues of tankers are waiting outside the strait right now.
India's LPG and oil shipments could resume shortly. Your ₹939 gas cylinder may finally get cheaper. 🛢️

The Iran war is not just about oil. It is about what you pay for rice, vegetables and dal.
One third of the world's fertilizer passes through the Strait of Hormuz. Since February 28 that route is effectively blocked. Global urea prices have jumped 50%. India's fertilizer manufacturers — including IFFCO — are already cutting urea output as gas prices soar. Bengal's kharif planting season begins in weeks. If farmers cannot afford fertilizer now, crop yields fall in August. Lower yields mean higher food prices — at your local bazaar, your kitchen, your family table.
The WFP warns 45 million more people could face food insecurity if this war continues. 🌾

Your favourite street food just got a serious upgrade — on hygiene.
KMC, in partnership with Bharat Chamber of Commerce and Doctors' Choice, is launching a comprehensive 6-month food safety and hygiene workshop programme for street vendors across Kolkata. Major hubs covered — Dacres Lane, Teritti Market, Park Street, Zakaria Street, Dalhousie, North Kolkata and Sector V.
Vendors will receive hands-on training plus a hygiene kit — gloves, apron, cap, sanitiser and food safety tools — along with a certificate on completion. KMC may also create dedicated food hubs exclusively for certified trained vendors.
Kolkata's street food culture is iconic. Now it is getting the safety standards to match. 🍽️

Qatar Airways suspended 12 major routes — Tokyo, Moscow, Seoul, Munich all grounded. But Kolkata flights resumed March 22 as the airline selectively restored key routes. Iran war airspace closures forced Qatar to operate just 39 daily flights versus its normal 170. Kolkata is now eastern India's most important international gateway. ✈️

Bengal asked the Supreme Court for time till May — citing elections and festivals. The CJI's response was blunt — "Do not politicise everything. This is a development issue." Just 366 metres of track remain at Chingrighata, EM Bypass. Bengal refused a traffic block for months. SC dismissed the plea entirely. 🚇
