What do you get when you gather a bunch of culture enthusiasts in a place that defines the cultural heritage of Durga Puja in Kolkata?

A Mahalaya morning full of walking, discussions, and delightful ferry rides!

On our Kumartuli Mahalaya experience, we witnessed thousands performing tarpan at the end of Pitr Paksh at Babughat, took ferries across the Hooghly river, and immersed ourselves in the wonderful chaos that is Kumartuli on their busiest day of the year!

There is a myth that the 1757 Durgotsav was the first recorded Durga puja of Kolkata. This myth was largely a brainchild of the British and the Bengali elite who got rich off their colonial masters.

Sadly, several well-known Bengali creators and writers continue to perpetuate this myth and pay homage to the forces that erased this region's pre-colonial history, despite sufficient evidence contrary to this narrative.

Fortunately, the older houses (pre-colonial in origin) that still hold considerable influence and celebrate Durga Puja following their ancient traditions, are holding up the true picture for everyone to see.

If you've never wandered through the winding lanes of Old Kolkata, have you even glimpsed her soul?

This Sunday, we set out on a mission. We would lead a group of travellers straight into the beating heart of the city that tells her story like an old grandmother's tale.

And when she bared her soul to us, tattered and decrepit as it may appear, we couldn't help but gaze in wonder at the beauty that shines through.

Because you see, dear reader, my Kolkata is not dead. She is not dying. She is very much alive in the tales we tell, in the sips of "cha" we share, and in the people who will brave the rain to discover her again and again.

A momentous experience of mid-river idol immersion and celebration at the oldest Bonedi Bari Durga Puja, and engaging in post-immersion traditions observed for centuries at the house of the Father of Ayurvedic Medicine. Major stops: Sovabazar Rajbari, Bagbazar Ghat, Kabiraj Gangaprasad Sen Bari, Kumartuli Ghat.

🕑 Timings: 2 pm to 6 pm
👋🏻 Meeting point: Sovabazar Lal Mandir (near Sovabazar metro gate 3)

Our Central Calcutta Photowalk last Sunday was a blast! 📸 Led by , we dove into interactive discussions and captured stunning shots ❤️

Exploring the mansions of the legendary Rani Rashmoni, philanthropist Motilal Seal, and 19th-century businessman Badan Chandra Roy was truly extraordinary. Each pillar and each corner told an intriguing story!

A special highlight was meeting Mr. Dilip Kumar Roy, the current head of the Roy family, who shared fascinating insights about his ancestral home.

Do I understand art? This was the question at the back of my mind as I walked through the halls of the National Gallery of Modern Art (the old Currency Building in Dalhousie) with my partner Deboleena ().

I won't lie. I won't pretend to understand everything I saw. That would be pompous and frankly, unnecessary.

Instead, I would say I felt it. On a visceral level. Maybe that's what art is supposed to do.

Maybe we're meant to feel more than we're supposed to understand.
