Notebooks. Bottles. Pencil boxes. School bags.

They may seem like small things. But for many children across , these are the reason they choose to come to school!

For the fourth year now, we’ve had the privilege of designing school kits for . In communities where government schools are usually seen as the last resort, Balutsav is flipping the script. With thoughtfully curated kits — filled with essentials like notebooks, stationery, bags and more — they’re offering children a fresh reason to walk into school in style, with their heads held high.

We change the design every year so it feels new, exciting — something to look forward to. Because sometimes, a fresh notebook or a beautifully printed bag is what nudges a child back through the school gate.

Once they’re in, the real work begins — that’s where the teachers take over. But getting them to come is the crucial first step. And if design can help do that, we’re honoured to play our part.

Deeply grateful to Ramesh and Binu Verma, for trusting us year after year. For reminding us that design, when rooted in empathy and culture, can be a quiet but powerful agent of change.

The last post made us realise that we never managed to pay proper homage to our comrade, brother, designer, homeboy, broski, partner-in-crime Shantanu Sharma.

Here is his story.

The year was 2019. We were a small advertising company of about 6-7 people in Kolkata growing fast, hungry and foolish. We had put out yet another ad on LinkedIn. With every talented person worth their salt leaving the city for bigger brands and better pay, this was quite a challenge. Yet sometimes,...

So the good folks at Bal Utsav have trusted us with their school-kit branding for a couple of years now. And within VERB, this meant Shantanu Sharma on the brief. I'd write some big words, and Shantanu would spend many painstaking hours ignoring his other briefs to come up with something that the kids might love. You know how some projects just put a smile on your face.

We lost Shantanu in September 2022. He was 27 years old. This was the last project he did for VERB. I did not manage to put up his work. Heck I did not even manage to send the school-kit samples to his family in UP lest it remind them - that cardboard box is still lying in one corner of the office, untouched. However when Ramesh Balasundaram called me for this years school-kit and I was going through the files -

Here is to you Mr. Sharma. For being so brave. Thank you for always striving to help others dream big. I hope you are having fun in some transcendental realm.
