‘Let me in’ (2010)

Set in 1983 America, ‘Let me in’ captures the tumultuous lives of two twelve-year-olds, a lone school boy and a vampire girl.

Neighbors Owen and Abby soon become closer in a town gripped by unusual murders and suspicions of occult practices.

As a bullied child, Owen finds solace in Abby’s presence despite witnessing Abby’s true nature as a vampire in the course of time.

Meanwhile, the police are in the town, finally arriving at Owen’s place where Abby is hidden, only to be brutally killed by a bloodthirsty Abby.

Owen unknowingly becomes part of Abby’s evil world and soon the two of them become inseparable.

The movie ends with Abby and Owen leaving the town, possibly for a new life where Owen is the sole caretaker of Abby.

‘Let me in’, in a broader view describes the fine transition of Owen’s life from a relatively upright but fearful schoolchild to a more courageous yet evil associate of Abby.

The story leaves thoughtful questions as to what is good, evil and even sheds light onto the broken families of 1980s American societies.

“Good thoughts, Good words and Good deeds”

Zoroastrianism was the dominant religion in Iran before the gradual conversion to Islam under various rulers.

It was rooted in the concept of good and evil and is believed to have transitioned from a polytheistic religion to a monotheistic one.

They believe in the supreme being ‘Ahura Mazda’ the creator God representing light, truth and goodness.

Their collection of scriptures is known as the Avesta, written in the Avestan language.

Zoroastrianism was one of the world’s oldest organized faiths and thought to have influenced many other cultures and religions, including Abrahamic faiths.

The Muslim conquest of Persia, which began in the 7th century AD, resulted in the gradual decline of the Zoroastrian population in Iran.

Kerala's colonial remains are unending…

Not too far from Kollam, on the bank of the Munroe Island is this unique 1878-built Dutch church where Saint Mary is worshipped as a Queen of India.

The Hindu community here offers worship and prayers on occasions of importance as the Dutch and the Anglo-Indian communities have more or less left the islands.

The infamous Perumon rail bridge is closer and the Lake Ashtamudi offers breathtaking views.

We observed many foreign tourists on Munroe Island where canal cruises and water tourism are emerging and crisscrossing the mangrove habitats.

Unfortunately it was also noticed small and large-scale land levelling may or may not be with the required permissions.

This group of islands and the surrounding delta region are known as as sinking islands.

Could that be the reason why land leveling is being carried out?

We read the story of Tuvalu, an island nation in the Pacific becoming a land of climate refugees.

Can we stop Munroe and similar low-lying regions from being in the spotlight again? As climate-responsible tourists we all have our own duties.

This red-brick church is a good example of a cultural handover where Dutch symbols are taken care of by the local community.

A visit to Munroe Island and this old place of worship kindles a sense of cultural exhange and the challenges of the climate crisis.

“Jai Panduranga Vittala” - Victory to the ash coloured boy who is standing on a brick!

Vithoba is a form of Vishnu worshipped in the Pandharpur temple in Maharashtra.
The lord is often depicted as a dark young boy who is standing atop a brick with his hands on his hips!

Kottappuram Fort in Kerala’s Kodungalloor was a strategic part of Travancore’s defenses, as it was a part of the Nedumkotta or the Travancore Lines—the great wall that decisively blocked Tipu’s advances.

The land of the Indus is also the land of abstractions😊

In India and straight to Kerala’s temples this time where images and patterns are developed using lighted lamps creating a visual extravaganza.

A practice that is ancient and as glorious as in the olden days!

To the devotee, the temples are not only mere centres of solemn idolatry, but are locations where they are perpetually reminded of the untold worldly and spiritual abstractions.

Along with the scale of the structure another thing one must have in mind while having a walk around the mighty Ellora caves is the fact that generations have worked for this structure to create it like what it is. With its nearly thirty-plus cave temples carved out of rocks depicting symbols of various heritage, its uniqueness is not in the fact that it is a stunning combination of cave temples, but in the heritage and history that it shares with the observer.
