*Chief Judicial Magistrate Srinagar Rejects Bail Pleas in Custodial Torture Case Involving DySP, Others*

Dateline: Srinagar, October 4

In a significant order, the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Srinagar on Saturday rejected the bail applications of a police officer and several others accused in a high-profile custodial torture case being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The accused include DySP Ajaz Ahmad Naik, Riyaz Ahmad Mir, and six others – Tanveer Ahmad Malla, Altaf Hussain Bhat, Mohammad Younis Khan, Shakir Hussain Khoja, Shahnawaz Ahmad Deedad, and Jehangir Ahmad Beigh. Their pleas were heard in connection with an FIR (RC-8(S)/2025) registered by the CBI on July 26, 2025, under serious charges including criminal conspiracy, attempt to murder, wrongful confinement, and grievous hurt.

According to the prosecution, the victim was kept in illegal confinement and subjected to repeated physical assaults and torture, resulting in grievous injuries including fractures and mutilation of genitalia. Medical reports from SKIMS Soura and GMC Barzulla, along with CCTV footage, corroborated custodial violence. From Prosecution side Zahoor Ahmad Malik CBI Prosecutor argued the case.

The Court noted that evidence on record, including witness statements, medical records, and CCTV footage, reflected a systematic pattern of abuse under the knowledge of senior officers. The order observed that the supervisory role of accused No. 1 Ajaz Ahmad Naik and the command position of accused No. 2 Riyaz Ahmad Mir pointed towards complicity.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Aadil Mushtaq Ahmad, while pronouncing the order, held that the bail applications were “devoid of merit and rejected”, clarifying that the observations would not prejudice the trial. Copies of the order have been furnished to the counsels free of cost.

Youm-e-Meeras Observed in Sopore: Tri*butes Paid to La*te Atiqa Bano

In a deeply moving tribute to the legacy of one of Kashmir’s most revered educationists, social reformers, and cultural preservationists, late Atiqa Bano, Youm-e-Meeras was observed on Sunday at Meeras Mahal Museum, Sopore. The event was organised jointly by Majlis-un-Nisa J&K in collaboration with Meeras Mahal Museum Sopore and Adbee Markaz Kamraz J&K.

The program was a celebration of Atiqa Bano’s lifelong dedication to education, social empowerment, and the preservation of Kashmir’s cultural heritage. As the founder of Meeras Mahal—the only private museum of its kind in north Kashmir, Atiqa Bano’s pioneering efforts have ensured the protection of centuries-old manuscripts, traditional artifacts, and rare cultural treasures that narrate Kashmir’s rich civilizational journey.

The event brought together a wide spectrum of participants including scholars, writers, educationists, social activists, and members of civil society. Speakers fondly remembered Atiqa Bano as not only a custodian of culture but also a visionary reformer who worked tirelessly for the upliftment of women and the promotion of the Kashmiri language and literature.

Speakers from Majlis-un-Nisa and Adbee Markaz Kamraz paid glowing tributes to her role in shaping educational institutions and in promoting awareness about cultural identity and women’s empowerment. They emphasized the importance of continuing her mission by supporting heritage institutions like Meeras Mahal Museum and promoting cultural education among the youth.

Addressing the gathering, MLA Sopore Irshad Rasool Kar, who was the chief guest on the occasion, lauded Atiqa Bano’s unmatched contributions, stating that Sopore and the entire Valley owe much to her visionary efforts. He assured full support for initiatives aimed at preserving her legacy and promoting local heritage.

Dr. G.N. Itoo, Director General Education, Kashmir, who was the guest of honour, also spoke at length about her pioneering role in reforming education and bringing cultural awareness into the academic discourse. He praised her as a role model for generations of educators and social workers.

The event was also graced by MLA Wagoora-Kreeri Irfan Hafiz Lone, Convenor INTACH J&K Chapter Mohammad Saleem Beigh, President Adbee Markaz Kamraz J&K Mohammad Amin Bhat, Advisor Majlis-un-Nisa Dr. Rafeeq Ahmad Masoodi, Ex-President of Municipal Council Sopore Ms. Masarat Rasool Kar, and President Private Schools Association Sopore Haji Anayatullah Hajini, among other dignitaries, members of civil society, traders’ federation, and educationists.

*Pakistan must resolve the legitimate demands People in Pak-Administered Kashmir*

_Government of India Reconciling with All Except Kashmiris: AIP_

*Srinagar, October 3:* Welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi's response to Trump’s peace plan for Gaza, the proposed visit of Taliban’s foreign minister to India in the coming days, the lifting of curbs to facilitate the visit of Sikh pilgrims to Pakistan and the release of people arrested after deadly clashes in Ladakh, alongside consistent offers of dialogue with Ladakhis despite their refusal to talk, the Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) has said that the Government of India is showing a pragmatic attitude to resolve most conflicts at home and abroad, except talking to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

AIP Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi in a press statement said, “We welcome the Taliban foreign minister's visit to India, but should the Government of India not tell 140 crore Indians, if the Taliban were so important in India, why were Indians fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan? Why were Muslim colleagues were accused of trying to implement Taliban-type tactics in various parts of the country by both powerful ministers and right-wing parties? The Indian government has allowed Sikh pilgrims to travel to Pakistan and is doing everything to persuade Ladakhis to talks, but unfortunately continues with its suppressive maintenance in J&K. On the day when 26 Ladakhis were released from jail, properties of Syed Ali Shah Geelani and others were attached, around one dozen youths were arrested and harassment of Kashmiri political prisoners continued in various jails, especially Tihar. New Delhi must tell the country why the current government is running away from dialogue. However, it is beyond doubt that only the weak run away from dialogue.”

The spokesperson also condemned the use of disproportionate force on people in Pakistan-Administered Kashmir and urged the Pakistan government to listen to and accept the legitimate demands of Kashmiris living directly under its control. He said Kashmiris on either side deserve a dignified life, resolution of their legitimate issues and political rights. Both countries must respect their rights and sentiments. “The bloody LoC cannot stop Kashmiris from feeling each other’s pain and sufferings. The Government of Pakistan should understand that if it does not address the legitimate issues of people in Pakistan-Administered Kashmir, it has no moral authority to speak against alleged ‘oppression’ in our part of Kashmir,” the statement added.
